Lawrence Richard Kavanaugh, known to his many friends as Larry, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at the age of 88. A resident of Timber Pines in Spring Hill, FL and Bemus Point, NY on Chautauqua Lake, Larry was born June 8, 1933 in Buffalo, NY where he lived before serving in the Army and attending Ohio University. It was there he met his wife of 59 years, Gail, who passed in 2019. Together they moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Larry worked in advertising until his retirement in 1995. Throughout his life, Larry was active pursuing his passions for camping and boating, but his lifelong favorite activities were singing and playing tennis. At Timber Pines he sang in many vocal groups, performing and writing several numbers, competed in multiple tennis competitions, and volunteered his marketing expertise in promoting the Timber Pines community. His house on Lake Chautauqua fulfilled his desire for a place where his whole family could be together and he enjoyed the music and learning at the Chautauqua Institution. His family and many friends at Chautauqua and Timber Pines were Larry’s great love, and he will be dearly missed for his lightheartedness, charming wit, friendly nature and love of life. Larry is survived by his sister Connie Wood in Oneonta, NY, many cherished cousins, in-laws Joyce and Rick Ross, his daughter Kelly Mawby in Portland, OR and son Tom Kavanaugh and wife Mary Kavanaugh in San Francisco, CA, along with his beloved grandchildren Julia and Melissa Mawby and Maddie and Dean Kavanaugh. Donations in Larry's honor can be made to the Chautauqua Institution at chq.org/giving.
