Born on July 30, 1959, in Statesville, NC, to Laurie Harper Jr. and Leona Harper, Laurie's life was marked by an unyielding passion for service, education, sports, cigars, and community. He was awarded a football scholarship to attend Lenoir-Rhyne University, he graduated in 1981 after earning his Bachelor of Arts in History.
