Laurie's obituary

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Laurie Lynne Begley, on February 25th, 2025 in Fruitland, Maryland.

Laurie was born to Edwin (George) & Barbara Matteson on November 19th, 1963, in Columbus Ohio. After graduating from Parkside High School in Salisbury MD, Laurie attended Wesley College where she received a degree in Psychology. Laurie later pursued a career in substance abuse counseling.

Laurie, affectionately known as “‘MisseL” by her daughters and Girl Scout troop, spent over 20 years as a Girl Scout Troop Leader for Troop 688. Laurie spent countless summers sleeping in treehouses, participating in lock-ins, hosting summer camps, and taking the troop to Busch Gardens. She also spent countless winters selling Girl Scout Cookies, mentoring young women, & teaching essential life skills. Regardless of the season, Laurie welcomed everyone into her home, and always made sure they knew they were family.

Laurie had a larger-than-life personality, and the ability to connect with any and everyone she met. Her jokes and laughter were infectious, and simply her presence could brighten anyone’s day. Laurie had a gift for sharing difficult truths with both compassion and honesty, making people naturally drawn to her.

Laurie is survived by her daughters, Danyle Begley, Ratyana Downing, and the women of Girl Scout Troop 688, who will forever cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Barbara & George Matteson.

Laurie’s life will be celebrated on Sunday March, 30th , 2025 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Salisbury, Maryland at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please go flirt with a stranger much younger than yourself in Laurie’s honor.
