Laura's obituary
Laura S. Waterbury, 89, of Old State Road, died on December 26, 2022 at the Masonic Care Community, Utica.
Mrs. Waterbury was born on September 7, 1933 in Moravia, a daughter of the late Howard and Enola (Bross) Stevens. She was one of the first females to graduate from Paul Smith’s College. On March 5, 1955, Laura was united in marriage to Chaloner S. Waterbury at the Christ United Methodist Church, Moravia. Mrs. Waterbury worked in the Library at West Canada Valley Elementary School for over 30 years. Her passion for books and sharing this knowledge was evident to all who knew her. Chaloner preceded her in death on January 17, 2003.
In her early years, Laura spent her summers in Old Forge working at Howard Johnson's and The Old Mill restaurant. She spent her free time enjoying the family camp built by her husband, father and her brother. Laura loved animals, especially her dogs, and in her remaining days she took the time to remind us that dogs truly are womans' best friend. She also spoke often about planting a tree in the yard with her father just outside the kitchen window, which became a favorite spot for her and the rest of the family to watch the birds and animals visit throughout the day, no matter the season. Playing cards with her grandchildren was another treasured activity and demonstrated her competitive side; Canasta was a house favorite.
Survivors include six grandchildren, Canaan, Lucas, and Anola Stage, Samuel and Alexandra Waterbury and Melissa Toromanides; 6 great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Charles Stage. In addition to her husband, Chaloner, Laura was predeceased by both of her children, Lisa Waterbury-Stage and Samuel Waterbury.
