Laura (Laurie)'s obituary
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we remember the passing of Laura (Laurie) Jean Owen-Hood. A beloved mother, sister, and friend whose simple, nonetheless often colorful, vibrancy touched so many lives. On Sunday, August 21, 2022, Laurie passed away peacefully at home after losing a courageous battle to lung cancer.
Although Laurie grew up in Carmel, Indiana, her story began in Noblesville, where she was born on September 2, 1960, to Patsy Lou Willoughby-Owen and Neal Jean Owen. From a young age, Laurie’s heart was shaped by her grandmother, Irene Owen, whose farm became a haven for nurturing animals and learning the true meaning of compassion. These early lessons in kindness and empathy became the foundation of Laurie’s life, inspiring her to give selflessly to others, right up until her final days. As a Reiki level III Master practitioner, Laurie shared her remarkable gift for healing and her deep love of crystals with countless students and friends, building a legacy of comfort, connection, and gentle wisdom that will endure for years to come.
Laurie deeply cherished her family, children, grandchildren, and friends. In 1996, she met her husband, Myles Edward Hood, and the two celebrated their love of all things music and musicals, acquiring collectables, and gardening. Together, they wove a family of prior children and many grandchildren who anointed Laurie as Nana. Laurie’s memory lives on in her children, Herb Peterson (Heidi), Elizabeth Griffin (Matt), and Mark Hood (Ashley), her grandchildren, Jordan, Michael, Harper, Gabriel, Emerson, Raphael, Samuel, Finnegan, and her beloved sister, Gloria Lynn Mason (David). She is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Herbert (d. 2022), and her partner, later in age and now passed, Myles (d. 2024).
Laurie will be lovingly remembered for her vibrant spirit, her boundless affection for her friends, her love of animals, her passion for music, drum circles, and the good ol’ Grateful Dead. Fiercely compassionate, she stood up for anyone facing injustice and was known for her generosity and her gift of forgiveness. Even her persistent forgetfulness, which became a source of laughter among her family, will live on in the cherished memories and smiles of all who were lucky enough to know her.
As of now, the immediate family has planned a private memorial celebration of life in the coming days.
