Background
Laura Jones loved local theater, and costumed many shows in her 20 years of dedication to the community. She especially loved costuming for local high school productions and helping young adults learn more about life and theater after high school. Her passion for supporting youth through theater earned her the affectionate nickname "Mama Jones" from the many young people she mentored throughout the years. No matter the age, she loved hearing her “kids” call her that.
One of the long standing theater communities the entire family has been supporting from the very beginning is Camp CenterStage, a summer theater camp in Maine founded and run by Alexis and Steven Dascoulious. The camp, which is celebrating its 15th year of inspiring campers of all ages, teaches life skills, leadership, and the importance of community involvement through educational theater programs. Adele, her daughter, still works there every summer, with a passion to bring the arts to as many young people as possible.
Laura's family has set up this fundraiser to start and support the "Mama Jones Costume Shop.” They have a vision for a space to teach young people that every part of putting on a show takes skill and guidance, especially what happens behind the scenes. The goal is to elevate the existing costuming program at camp, and be able to provide more opportunities for campers to expand their skills in all aspects of putting on a theatrical production. By establishing the “Mama Jones Costume Shop” in Laura’s memory, her legacy as a costumer and educator will live on and influence the lives of the hundreds of campers who will benefit from this growing program at Camp Centerstage.
