Larry W. Matthews, 81, of Yuma, Arizona passed away June 1, 2023. Larry was a well-loved and admired member of his community, and his loss is felt deeply by those who knew him.

He was born in Gregory, Arkansas on Christmas Day 1941, to R.T. and Mary Matthews. Larry developed a love for the outdoors at an early age. He had a fun-filled childhood growing up in rural Arkansas, hunting and fishing with his family as soon as he was old enough to hold a shotgun or fishing pole. His family was adored and well-respected in the community by fellow farmers and childhood friends alike.

Larry entered the United States Marine Corps in 1964 and stayed on reserves with an honorable discharge. Larry enrolled in the California Highway Patrol Academy in 1967 and served the people of California admirably for 34 years with several commendations. He was known for his dedication and pride in the CHP and his unwavering commitment to public safety. He was beloved by his fellow officers and service partners over his career and relished his friendships. Larry was always humble despite his many accomplishments and never sought the spotlight. He was happiest spending time with his family and friends, and everyone who knew him will remember his kindness and hospitality.

Larry and Linda Matthews were married in 1980 and enjoyed 43 years together. They raised three children from blended families with love, care, and a lot of fun. Larry also enjoyed action sports and taught his son and many youngsters how to ride bicycles and motorcycles, shoot guns, drive vehicles, and play ball. He spent a lifetime admiring and exploring the natural beauty of the Southwest with his beloved wife, Linda, and their children and could often be found riding motorcycles and camping in the Sonora Desert with his closest friends and family. He also had many interests and hobbies including OTL softball, bowling, road trips to historical sites, a regimen of running/walking up to 15 miles each day, and his unique online ice hockey leagues, which he won year after year. No team, in any sport, could replace his love for the Razorbacks and his pride in being born and raised in Arkansas.

Larry was predeceased by his parents R.T. and Mary Matthews; and sisters Ellen Korfanty, Becky Price, and Carolyn Jacks. He is survived by his wife Linda Matthews; his brother Richard (Margie) Matthews; his son Rich (Becky) Matthews; his stepson Kevin (Christine) Brown, and stepdaughter Jamie (Harvey) Salazar; his five grandchildren, Samantha (David) Craig, Tanner Brown, Jessica Brown, Sebastian Salazar, and Phoenix Salazar; three great-grandchildren, Mattie, Olivia, and Jordan Craig; a host of nieces and nephews; and many more friends.

Larry will be deeply missed by his loved ones and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his long and meaningful life. His legacy of hard work, dedication, and love will continue to inspire those who knew him for years to come. Psalm 23 was one of his favorite passages in the Bible.
