Lance's obituary

In Memoriam: Lance Matthews (Feb. 8, 1961 - Jan. 11, 2024)

On a winter's day in 1961, in the warm embrace of his home on Mckean Ave., Lance Matthews entered the world, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Matthews bloodline. Born to the proud parents, Clarissa and James Henry Matthews, Lance's arrival was an intimate affair, witnessed by his older sister in the very home that would nurture 4 generations of his family.

As the forth-born among four siblings—Jean, Kirkwood (now Mustafa), and Kevin Clinton—Lance carved a unique space in the Matthews tapestry. From his early days at the Friends School to his graduation from Carver High School, Lance exhibited a penchant for music, eventually joining the band during his time at Morgan State University. Lance's guitar became a playground for his nieces and nephews, and his presence in the household earned him the endearing title of the "cool uncle."

Lance's teenage years were marked by playful banter, teasing his nieces with threats of "knuckle sandwiches" and enigmatic "Joe Leaders." Lance was easily moved to laughter, and his easygoing nature, and genuine affection made him a cherished presence, even when he forced his nieces and nephews to call him "Mr. Uncle Lance '' when asking for a favor.

In the journey of life, Lance found purpose behind the wheel of trucks. Lance spent many years as an MTA bus driver then finally establishing his own venture, "Trash Man Services." Beyond the business, Lance served his community, generously contributing to events organized by nonprofits and community organizations. Lance's altruism was an extension of the warmth he exuded, always there when needed, a helping hand in both the professional and personal spheres.

A connoisseur of good meals, Lance's culinary skills were a reflection of his love for fresh ingredients and his mother's home cooking. His calls and visits were occasions of joy and laughter, filled with his famous phrase, "You're not my favorite anymore," a playful declaration shared with his nieces Rasheedah, Naimah, and Siddeeqah. Lance's love was evident in every shared moment, in every jest, and in the way he would say he loved you at the end of each phone call.

Lance's sensitivity was a defining trait, and his love although complex knew no bounds. Survived by his daughter Myindai Allen, his sister Jean Deese, brothers Kevin Clinton Matthews and Mustafa Sharif, nieces, nephews, and a multitude of extended family and friends, Lance Matthews leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and a lifetime dedicated to those he held dear. In the echoes of his laughter and the memories he created, Lance will forever remain in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him.
