LaGretta's obituary
We celebrate the life of a one of a kind individual who devoted her life to uplifting others. Our earthly angel returned home on June 27th, 2025 at Novant Health in Huntersville, NC. LaGretta Irene Lowery blossomed into this world on February 3, 1947 to Mr. Louis Gene and Mrs. Annie Mildred Mayhew Lowery. She was the oldest of seven children. She journeyed through life with God by her side in every step and entered eternal rest on June 27, 2025.
Growing up in Davidson, NC she was a proud graduate of the historic Ada Jenkins Elementary and Torrence-Lytle High School, North Mecklenburg County’s first and only public schools for African-Americans. LaGretta always kept Davidson in her heart and was instrumental in ongoing efforts to shed light on her community working with town leadership.
LaGretta married the late John Frank Davis and they were blessed with two wonderful children, Karlanita Davis Gaston and Jernara Davis, who they raised in Charlotte, NC.
She later attended the distinguished institution of Johnson C. Smith University, where she flourished into a leader and a scholar. Even as a full-time mom, LaGretta graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1978.
After graduating, her work at and the Charlotte Housing Authority was more than a job; it was a mission anchored in love and kindness. With deep empathy and unrelenting advocacy, LaGretta walked beside the marginalized, the voiceless, and the forgotten— arming them not only with compassion but with resources to build lasting independence. After retirement, LaGretta continued with her zest for helping others by opening a home daycare/afterschool program, Gretta’s Garden of Children.
LaGretta loved God. She was an active member at Davidson Presbyterian Church serving as an evangelist. She also enjoyed visiting and sharing in the worship experience with friends and family at other churches. She always kept her bible with her. She enjoyed reading from the book of Proverbs and Corinthians. LaGretta loved her friends and family— enjoying spending time with them at various functions. She enjoyed music, dancing, game night, movies, and laughter.
LaGretta was preceded in death by her parents, Louis Lowery (Davidson, NC) and Annie Mildred Lowery (Davidson, NC); siblings, Lewis Lowery (Davidson, NC) and Veronica Howard (Davidson, NC); children Karlanita Davis Gaston (Charlotte, NC) and Jernara Davis (Charlotte, NC); and granddaughter, Jessica Gaston(Charlotte, NC).
She leaves to cherish her fond, loving memories four grandchildren: DeFerrus J. Davis (Latoya) (Charlotte, NC), Kaneisha Gaston Arhin (Charlotte, NC), Saadia Davis (Charlotte, NC), Malloray Gaston (Charlotte, NC); two great-grandchildren: Jaden and Tristan Davis; son in-law: Charles Gaston (Karlanita); four sisters: Johnsie Beatty (David) (Davidson, NC), Agnes Rivens (Marcus) (Charlotte, NC), Brenda Johnson (Tollis) (Charlotte, NC), and Mary Black (Charlotte, NC); and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
LaGretta was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her smile could light up an entire room. The affection she showed to others will forever live on in their hearts!
