Background
The Cure Starts Now represents something truly different – a grassroots effort dedicated to, not just fighting one cancer, but the elimination of ALL cancers. We believe as the experts do; that in order to truly cure cancer you have to focus on:
- those cancers that are immune to treatment
- those cancers that also affect children
- and those cancers that are the biggest bullies with the highest death rate
Kylie's cancer was one that hit all of those marks. She was diagnosed with AT/RT (atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor). AT/RT is a very rare, fast-growing tumor that begins in the brain and spinal cord. It usually occurs in children aged three years and younger, although it can occur in older children and adults. There is no standard treatment for patients with central nervous system atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor. Because AT/RT is fast-growing, a combination of treatments is usually given. After surgery to remove the tumor, treatments for AT/RT may include combinations of the following: chemotherapy, radiation therapy, high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell transplant. There is also no standard treatment for children with recurrent childhood central nervous system AT/RT. Treatment may include the following: radiation therapy, palliative treatment to improve quality of life, a clinical trial of targeted therapy, a clinical trial of targeted therapy given with immunotherapy.
A new strategy for fighting cancer starts today. The Cure Starts Now is dedicated to pursuing cancer research on those fronts that offer the most promise rather than simply fighting “cancer by the numbers” as we have for the past 70 years. And in doing so, we pledge that the fight against cancer will be won. The cure starts NOW.
The Cure Starts Now has been an amazing support system for our family. Kylie has left such a tremendous impact on those who knew her and followed her journey. Her story is not over. Now, more than ever, we need to fight for a cure. For Kylie, for our family, for the children that are continuing to fight this awful disease and those who have yet to begin their battle, for all of the other children who have hung up their swords and for all of the families whose lives will forever be changed by a pediatric cancer diagnosis. We will never give up on a homerun cure! Our children deserve to simply be children and to live!
The Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley provides family-centered programs and services through all stages of the pediatric cancer journey with compassion and integrity.
PCFLV has provided so much for our family since the beginning of Kylie's cancer diagnosis up until now and going through planning her memorial. They have provided us with countless gift cards for groceries, gas and food, E-Z pass vouchers for our endless commutes to CHOP, meal tickets while we were inpatient for months, tickets to events to create family memories such as Iron Pigs games, Dorney Park, etc., birthday cards for Kylie and her sister, costs related to the memorial and so much more. They are an incredible support system for local families going through this grueling journey of a pediatric cancer diagnosis. We are so lucky to have their support now and in the future as we continue to navigate the loss of Kylie.
