Krystel's obituary

Krystel Clair Lyn Medley-Greene was born on May 7, 1961, at Freedman’s Hospital (now known as Howard University Hospital) in Washington, D.C. She was the middle child of three to the late Charles Medley and Mary Medley, and sister to Melody Medley and Charles “Flip” Medley Jr.

Krystel attended D.C. Public schools her entire life and graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School in 1979. While at Coolidge, she simultaneously participated in a college bridge program at Howard University. She graduated from Howard in 1982 shortly after the birth of her first child Krystina Raychelle Emmanuelle Bryant.

While working at Howard University Hospital as a medical secretary she met John Greene and they later wed in December 1988. From their union came Johntel Martina Greene (1990) and John-Kenry Greene (1993). John had two children from a previous marriage: Mariama C. Greene and David C. Greene whom Krystel loved as her own. One of her favorite things to tell people, from close relatives to complete strangers was “We have five kids – his, mine and ours!”

Krystel was known as a smart, fun-loving, and trailblazing woman. She loved to stay busy and worked a host of jobs throughout her career, she started two small business GKI - Greene Krystel’s Images - videography business and medical marketing business called Blessed Marketing. She served as the marketing manager at Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly MD, the Chief of Marketing at Six Flags in Upper Marlboro MD, as well as an Academic Secretary at The Country Day School in St. Croix. She loved to serve her community and had a passion for helping others. So much so, that she devoted 15 years of her life as a public servant where she worked as a Chief of Staff in the Maryland General Assembly. Even after being diagnosed with cancer, she did as much as she could remotely to support her constituents.

Krystel, known to many as Ms. Greene, dedicated her life to helping others and making all people feel welcome. Neighborhood mom and friend to many, she loved everyone at face value and supported many people throughout her life. Extremely kind and vivacious, she was known for her beautiful smile, heartfelt laughter, playful pranks, and ability to tell and bring out the best stories. She raised her children while also opening her heart and home to all youth providing food, shelter, job opportunities and love. Often seen cruising around PG in the latest Saab toting random kids and new-found friends to her family activities providing them opportunities and experiences that wouldn’t have been possible without her.

She was a connector and the ultimate hostess, able to bring all types together, usually around her amazing cooking. She didn’t just cook, she poured love (and a lot of butter) into every dish she made. A lover of words and always ahead of the curve she could challenge and beat anyone in scrabble or spades, always picked out great shows before they were popular, solved every mystery before the end of the episode (seen every episode of Law and Order and Murder She Wrote) and enjoyed a good book. Krystel always wanted to find ways to help others and rarely asked for help herself, even in her last years as she privately fought her battle with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer. Krystel remained a woman of faith her entire time on this earth. Her bible never left her side, even during her battle with cancer she always stayed thankful for her blessings.

Krystel is preceded in death by her loving parents Charles Medley and Mary Medley. She leaves to cherish her memory, daughter Krystina Bryant (spouse Sean Sims), daughter Johntel Greene, son John-Kenry Greene (spouse Emily Douangmala); two stepchildren Mariama Greene and David Greene, two grandchildren Kasim Sims (age 8) and Caleb Spears (age 17); nephew James Williams Jr.; niece Sara Ezeonu (spouse Chuma Ezeonu); nephew Braxton Jenkins two siblings: brother Charles “Flip” Medley (spouse Grace Medley); sister Melody Jenkins; sister by love, not by blood Belinda Broadus and a host of family and friends.
