Kristoffer's obituary
On July 22nd 2022, Kristoffer Simon Ongbongan (Krismon), a devoted and loving husband to Heidi, and father to Max, Maggie, and Harry passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by those that loved him, at the age of 45, after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer.
Krismon was born on September 24, 1976 in Manila to Simon and Lourdes Ongbongan. He is the eldest out of their five children and their only son. He is brother to Kathleen, Kaye Ann, Krystine and Krischel. The family moved to Sunnyvale, California in 1989 and Krismon attended Cupertino Junior High and Homestead High School, graduating in 1994. He was on the wrestling team in high school. He loved to watch sports, something that he began doing with his grandfather in the Philippines and continued doing throughout his life. Kris especially loved to tinker with things and worked for his dad’s company building computers.
Kris attended the University of Arizona where he received a BA degree in German Studies. He then attended Northwestern Polytechnic University for his MS in Computer Science. Krismon made many lifelong friendships at U of A. His friends were a constant throughout his life. Almost every year, he would go for a golf weekend with his friends called 'The Fools Cup,' which was a tradition that began during college; they would play in the summer, when only fools played golf. He worked alongside his friends to strengthen the visibility and create community among Asian Americans on campus. He was part of AACA, Asian American Cultural Association. He and his friends helped start FASA, Filipino American Student Association, which continues to be strong at U of A.
Kris worked in Tech Operations and System Administration for LinkExchange, Microsoft, Venture Frogs, and Zappos where he inspired everyone to be their best. He cared about the business, the customers of each company, and the people he worked with. Kris had a way of making each person feel special, and would welcome you with open arms, making you feel like a good friend right away. He took a personal interest in everyone he met and would engage with them in conversations about those interests in earnest. Kris cared deeply about his team, and much of his teams' success was a result of the strong bond formed, with Kris at the foundation. He did not see his team as coworkers, but treated them like family, inviting them into his home and life.
Kris and Heidi met in 1998 and married July 24, 1999 in Las Vegas with their parents as witnesses. Their love and commitment never wavered and their love was one that couples could only wish for. Kris leaves behind three beautiful children, Max, Maggie, and Harry, who Kris loved with all his heart. He was always present in their lives, encouraging them to be their best and giving them the tools to be good humans. He was so proud of their many accomplishments, but he cared more that they were good, kind people, and he strived to demonstrate that for them everyday.
Krismon had many passions. He loved technology. He loved his old Datsun Roadster. More than anything, he loved to care for others and gather together. He frequently cooked for his family and could often be found smoking meat and hosting BBQs and potlucks; he wanted to create special moments with people with at least 3 different kinds of meat. Kris enjoyed the silly laughable moments, and Kris was always up for a random fun hangout, especially if it involved food.
Krismon had many hopes and dreams and fought to defy the odds of pancreatic cancer. He wanted to see all his kids graduate high school and college. He wanted to hold a grand baby and play catch with them. He wanted to celebrate his 50th Wedding Anniversary. He had a whole list of things he wanted to do with Heidi, with his family, his friends, with his life. He was a good human, a great dad, a wonderful husband, a caring son and brother. He believed in family and was loyal to his friends.
Krismon is survived by his wife Heidi, his three children, Max, Maggie, and Harry, his parents, Simon and Lourdes, his sisters, Kat, Kaye Ann, Krystine, Krischel and their families.
