Background
Kristan's career was working as a veterinary assistant and she was passionate about the rescue animals she adopted. In choosing NEADS World class service dogs charity, their mission is inline with Kristan's passion to help others, human and animal alike.
Here is some history of the origins of the Pawsitively Strong Fund
In the aftermath of the Boston marathon bombings, Susan and Mike Curtin were moved to take action and approached NEADS with the idea of creating a fund to provide Service Dogs for survivors of the bombings. Boston Duck Tours (BDT) joined the Curtin's as lead donors, and the fund was named “Pawsitively Strong” through a naming contest among staff members at BDT.
On Wednesday, May 8, 2013, NEADS announced that survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing who have sustained a permanent physical disability were to be offered Service Dogs through the creation of a new fund.
NEADS worked in collaboration with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Victim Assistance Program and the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance to identify potential recipients. Former MA Attorney General Martha Coakley said at the time: “We are grateful to those donors who have agreed to fund Service Dogs for victims of the marathon bombings and look forward to working with NEADS to identify appropriate homes for these incredible animals.”
Today, the fund is open to include survivors of violent crime in Massachusetts who have a permanent physical disability as a result of that crime and who qualify for the NEADS program. Additionally, those who have applied and been accepted for an Assistance Dog are also eligible for the fund if the applicant works directly with survivors of violent crimes in Massachusetts. (NEADS Assistance Dogs are partnered with teachers, therapists, and those who work in courthouse and hospital settings.) Contribute to Neads
