Pic at Weebly where our team …
Pic at Weebly where our team was waiting to get into a conference room. I really enjoyed working with Kirill. He will be missed.
I had the privilege of working with Kirill the last several years and our conversations were frequently the highlights of my day. Kirill was a brilliant person who always wanted to not only get to know how things worked, but then take his findings and help everyone around him better understand those topics. He put his best foot forward in everything he did and supported the people around him so they could do the same. The world will be a lesser place without his bright spark of curiosity.

The news that Kirill passed is crazy to me. It doesn't feel real.

I haven't seen him in years—since Square went fully remote and we both left San Francisco. So in my head, he still feels just one Slack message away. But his account is deactivated now. And I can't message him anymore.

Now I'm scrolling through our Slack history, back to late 2021. It's just real, fun, candid conversation—for no reason. Not about work. Not polite. Not efficient. Just two people talking because we wanted to. We didn't even work together after 2021, but we kept chatting on and off, even up until the other month. I don't have any other conversations like that on Slack.

It's kind of funny we stayed in touch on Slack, because he didn't use social media. I don't know why we never moved to Messages or anything given how we were always so candid—gossiping, joking, talking shit. There was this constant suspense that HR might read it one day, which somehow made it better. Like, "even if someone sees this, I'm fine with it. It's the truth".

Kirill was a great engineer. Passionate in a way that feels rare—not tied to job titles or career climbing. He really just loved engineering. At the same time, he had this wonderfully lazy energy that made him even better. He didn't waste time on ceremony. He just found the shortest, cleanest path through things. He loved Rust, and his blog (https://github.com/pretzelham…) became a go-to resource in the community. The fact that he just hosted it on GitHub instead of a website was so him. It got translated into four languages and had a ton of contributors—which says a lot about how respected he was. But every time I asked what he'd built with Rust, he'd laugh and say “nothing yet.” That always cracked me up.

We also shared a really specific sense of humor—dark, dry, a little chaotic. Back at Weebly, even when we didn't work together, we used to prank each other for no reason. That eventually carried into our work. One time we got pulled onto another team to help meet a deadline, and they were super strict about PR reviews. Normally I'd be the one enforcing those rules, but with Kirill's contagious IDGAF energy, we ended up creating a bunch of fake PRs, pre-approving them for each other, and using them to merge real code after hours. It worked. The other team's manager was furious. We thought it was hilarious.

Right now I'm listening to your Spotify Wrapped playlist. We swapped playlists every December. I never did that with anyone else. But Kirill would always message me, excited to share his, excited to see mine. I always thought that was wholesome and sweet.

I miss you so much, @pretzelhammer.

Many condolences on your loss, from colleagues of Alex.

I've been working Kirill since he started out as an intern with Weebly. He was an extremely talented engineer that was trusted with many challenging problems that few could exceed at. He was patient and his thoughts were always respected.

I will always remember his comedic timing and ability to bring light and laughter. Rest in peace my friend you will be missed

Kirill and I worked on adjacent teams since I joined Square six years ago, but we first got to know each other in 2021 when our friend Cindy made a small Slack channel to gather some of her work friends to socialize and break up the monotony of our new work-from-home environment. There were only four of us but we got on well and it became a lively space for joking around, discussing work, and -- one of Kirill's favorites -- playing DrawBattle.io. It was the first place I turned to chat about music, ask for advice, or just celebrate the approach of the weekend. Between his sense of humor and his no-nonsense attitude, Kirill was always making us laugh or making us think. One day he shared a playlist he had made called "songs kia might like", and I thought, we may never interact in person but we are friends :) Needless to say, the music was great.

I'm really gonna miss you Kirill. I'm so grateful I got to know you and experience the world with you in it <3

Kirill was one the best engineers I worked with. I was there to see him go from a wide-eyed intern to an incredibly talented engineer and a credit to his team. I also saw him go from a novice pool player to someone who gave me a run for my money. He did everything with an intense focus and integrity, and he never apologized for being himself. I’m truly sorry for your loss.
Kirill was a gifted engineer who didn’t stand for any sort of nonsense at work. He (thankfully) called us out whenever we were spinning in circles, then put in the hard work to set us back on the right path. He was on a short list of engineers I used as an example to strive for.
This is really sad. I worked with Kirill for almost a decade at weebly/square. He was a really nice guy and I am very sorry for your loss.  Kirill was always really helpful and a hard worker. He will be missed.
I had the great fortune of working on different teams with Kirill for the past decade. He had the kind of brilliant, generous intellect that brought out the best in everyone around him. It was hard to approach challenges with anything less than humor, patience and focus with his example beside you. He was one of the funniest people I knew. My deepest condolences to his family. He was a genuine light in this world and I’ll miss him always.
Kirill was a friend, former coworker, and former roommate of mine. He was a strong, light-hearted, and passionate personality, and we shared an enthusiasm for board games, office culture, and the random inside joke that was repeated way too many times but still remained funny. Whether it was in a personal or professional capacity, Kirill was always a bright spot and a joy to be around. It's heartbreaking to hear this news.
I only got to work with Kirill for a short time, but I'm so thankful that our paths crossed. He was a passionate, dedicated, and thoughtful engineer, as well as a lovely person who was unabashedly himself. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I will miss hearing his voice in meetings.
I was one of Kirill's managers at Square.   I'll never forget the one day Kirill turned on his video last year in our team's Secret Santa meeting and how excited everyone in the room was to see him!  I always looked forward to my 1:1s with him because he was always very real and never hesitated to state things like they are.  I was really hoping this is the year I'm going to get to see Kirill in "real life".  He was an exceptional engineer and such a talented, quirky, beautiful person.  No words can do justice, but I'm going to miss him very much and my deepest condolences to his family.

I worked with Kirill. He was foundational to so many things, all of those things revolving around giving back and helping others. For nearly a decade at Square, he was always striving to help our sellers run their businesses, helping us out with any task no matter how large or small, and was always giving back with open source software such as Maker or his Rust blog.

I am so sorry to hear the news and wish his family only the absolute best. He was kind and an exceptional person, the whole team will miss him deeply.

My condolences for your loss. Eddie and I are praying for you and Alex
We were sitting in 8th grade history class doing recitations as a group from the history textbook and one of the readers was exceedingly dull. The history teacher knew she could count on Kirill and called on him to be the next reader. He sang the entire page in front of the whole class and turned the mood around.
