Kevin's obituary

Kevin Hugh Moore, 54, of Greensboro died on January 14, 2019. Kevin is survived by a cousin Mike Barnette (Michelle) of Gastonia, NC and many friends. He is predeceased by his parents Juanita Elizabeth Fletcher Moore and Glenn Hugh Moore. Kevin was born on January 20, 1964 in Greensboro. He grew up in the High Point and Jamestown area and attended the North Carolina School of the Arts (now UNCSA) in Winston-Salem for high school and college, where he studied oboe performance and conducting. He also attended Guilford Technical Community College where he studied data processing. In college, Kevin developed his music arranging skills that would later serve him as president, owner, arranger, and orchestrator of his business, Oboerama Music (ASCAP). He produced and published nearly 40 arrangements, transcriptions, and double reed parts, most notably a wind ensemble arrangement of the Escape, Bike Chase, and Departure from E.T. that was performed by the Ohlone Wind Orchestra, and an orchestral reduction of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet that is currently used annually by the Carolina Ballet, the North Carolina Academy of Dance Arts, and the Atlantic City Ballet. Kevin developed a shaper for oboe reeds that the late principal oboist of the Cleveland Orchestra, John Mack, called “amazing” and “the best shaper he’d used in years.” Kevin was a highly skilled professional oboist and English hornist and performed with most of the major orchestras in North Carolina, and several in Virginia and South Carolina, in many cases acting as principal. He has held positions as English horn with the Western Piedmont Symphony, 2nd oboe and English horn with the Greensboro Symphony, and principal oboe of the Salisbury Symphony. Kevin spent most of his adult life living in Gastonia, NC where he was a full-time caregiver to his mother, who he was very close to and loved dearly. After his mother’s death, Kevin lived briefly in suburbs of Houston, Texas and then moved to Greensboro in December of 2014. Music was Kevin’s life but he also loved horses and was especially fond of the racehorse, Ruffian. He appreciated beautiful flowers, art, the mountains, and was a cat lover, especially to his own cat, Kitty. He enjoyed quoting movies and TV shows, sharing jokes and memes, and was very outspoken and opinionated about music and politics, which sometimes ruffled some feathers. He was a fan of John Williams and the Star Wars movies until recently, when he felt the movie score orchestrations were subpar. Kevin’s dream job was to be John Williams’ orchestrator for the remaining movies in the Star Wars franchise. Kevin had a strong sense of justice and he always rooted for the underdog. He frequently spoke up for anyone he thought was being treated unfairly. Kevin was a good person who will be remembered for his brilliance, delightful snark, wit, and musical talent. He faced many hardships and challenges throughout his life, but never lost his sense of humor. Funeral arrangements were handled by Triad Cremation & Funeral Service. A private celebration of Kevin’s life is planned for this summer in the mountains of North Carolina. The family would like to thank the Greensboro Police Department for their investigation into Kevin’s tragic, untimely death. We can all honor Kevin’s memory by being kind to one another, especially the weird, quirky, different, and sometimes hard to love people of the world, for they are often the ones who need it most.
