E.'s obituary

FINNERTY – E. “Kevin” Finnerty, 95, of Atlantic Beach, NY, passed away October 29, 2020. Kevin was born June 20, 1925 in NYC to William and Stella Finnerty. He enlisted in the US Navy in September, 1943 and was stationed in the South Pacific on the Landing Ship Medium 213 during WWII. His ship was hit by a kamikaze plane and catastrophically damaged. The crew went unescorted through enemy territory to Pearl Harbor and gunned down at least two enemy planes that night. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
After serving, Kevin worked for Prudential Insurance company and was an active member of his church, St. Ignatius Martyr, a loyal volunteer in The Voice of The Faithful, and a member of The American Legion.
He was a devoted husband to Rita Hangley Finnerty and father of 8 children: Eileen, Mary Anne (Steve), Bill (Nancy), Terri, Cathy (Dave), and Maggie. He was blessed with 9 grandchildren: Kevin, Peter, Sarah, Tim, Ryan, Harrison, John, Katie and Max. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, his two sons, Kevin and Timmy, who died of genetic cardiac issues, and his two brothers, William and Peter.
Kevin was a true patriot, a devout Catholic and an avid sportsman (and fan!). He loved the beach, especially floating in the Atlantic Ocean, and taking long walks in search of the best swimming spot.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Legion, Victor Murtha Post 972.
