Kent's obituary
James Kent “Kent” Tompkins, age 72 of Redmond, WA died peacefully on Aug 11, 2024 at Evergreen Health Hospice Care in Kirkland, WA. Preceded in death by parents, Lou and Marcille, and grandson Sam. Survived by partner of 22 years, Beverly Phillips; daughters, Tiffany Kimball, Tara Royce, Teal Dreher (Josh) and Taylor Tompkins; 6 grandchildren; step-brother Rod Tompkins; Bev’s daughter Erin Lundeberg (Dan); and many lifelong friends. He will be deeply missed by all.
Kent was born in Oakland, CA and grew up in Lafayette, CA. As a young man he served in the Airforce 1971-74 and Air National Guard 1974 – 1975. He studied art and business at the University of Alaska Anchorage 1975-1977 and at the University of Hawaii in Hilo 1979-81. Following college, he married and raised 4 daughters. He lived in Hawaii, Colorado, and Nevada. He spent several years working for Resort Data Processing selling resort software. He also worked for The Loring Group as a recruiter in Lake Tahoe, Vancouver and Bremerton Washington.
Kent is best known for his 15-year career as a Senior Sales Consultant at West Hills Honda of Bremerton where he sold cars to more than 3000 happy customers. As an artist Kent brought joy to people through his explosive and vibrant paintings, a reflection of his exuberant character. In his later years he painted ties with an attitude, smaller canvases for his colorful art.
Kent lived life with passion. He enjoyed being a dad and grandpa. He helped to raise 4 beautiful daughters and relished watching them grow into young women with their own lives and families. He savored good food and drink, especially when shared with friends and at his favorite escape, McMenamins. Motorcycling, skiing, and RV camping were among his outdoor pursuits. All better when spent in the company of Bev and their family and friends. He took pleasure in exploring the world with Bev at his side. Travels to Italy, France, New York, New Orleans, Texas, Montana, California, Peru, Argentina, and Bali were among his favorite trips.
Kent loved people. To talk with a stranger, to learn a friend's hopes and dreams and help them reach for the stars. He touched many lives on his journey and we are all better for having experienced his smile, laugh, quick whit and positive energy.
A special thank you to the compassionate staff at Evergreen Health Hospice Care and the many skilled professionals who provided his care. Please accept our gratitude.
