Kenneth's obituary

Kenneth John Tomsyck Sr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 27th, 10:36 pm at St. Michael's Hospital Silverdale, WA. He leaves behind his wife Ivylani M. Tomsyck, their son Kenneth J. Tomsyck Jr, and daughter Elizabeth U. M. Garcia.

Ken or "Tom" as some friends and family know him, was born at St. Luke's Hospital Milwaukee Wisconsin on October 2nd, 1941, to his father Edward E. Tomsyck, and mother Charlotte F. Wojciechowski. Growing up the third youngest with three siblings in Wisconsin Rapids, his youth was spent tending to and riding horses, munching on black licorice, and maybe skipping Catholic School to go to western movies matinees.

Tom joined the United States Navy in 1960. He served during and post the Vietnam War conflict as a Hull Tech/Welder on the USS Vesuvius; Simon Lake; O'Bannon; Piedmont; Barbour County; White Plains, and the Sacramento. Along with a chilly 13 months at McMurdo Station Antarctica, for the joint armed forces expedition "Operation Deep Freeze".

After his South Pole adventure, Tom, now stationed in NAS Alameda, continued his Navy service in the warmer climates of California. Finishing his postgraduate Naval school in Monterey, and "C School" welding training in Long Beach & San Diego. It was in Alameda where he met a lunch-breaking civil service clerk named Ivylani Peleiholani. After their meet-cute, his handsome blue eyes and several dates (including one to see the Green Bay Packers vs. the Oakland Raiders, both of their fave football teams) worked well enough. They fell in love and 5 months later got married in Carson City Nevada on July 27th, 1974.

So nice they decided to do it twice, with a big Hawaiian wedding in Ivy's hometown of Kalapana Hawaii on November 2nd, 1974.  After the honeymoon, the newlyweds had to adjust fast to married life "Navy" style. With transfer orders from Alameda to Yokosuka Naval Base-Japan and Ivy packing some extra luggage (aka baby onboard), their first child Kenny Jr was born in April of 1976. For the family's last station post-Yokosuka, Tom and Ivy chose to reside in Washington State upon his 20-year retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1980. Which was held on the iconic U.S.S. Missouri at the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton WA.

Tom and Ivy decided to make their home in Poulsbo WA, with Ivy working civil service at NSB Bangor, as they welcomed the birth of their second child, daughter Elizabeth in February 1986, and adopting two "fur babies", the family pets Mario & Kitty (meow they continue to rest in peace, meow). During this time Tom's 25-year post-Naval career was under several Federal Govt. contractors at NSB Bangor & Indian Island, retiring from Johnson Controls in 2005.

With a passion for activism & civic duty, Ken was a longtime active member of United Steelworkers Union Local 9241 in Silverdale WA, and the Washington State Labor Council. Partaking in many labor union events in Kitsap, to the front lines of the Steelworkers' organized march at the massive "Battle of Seattle" WTO protests in 1999. Tom was also an active member of the Washington State & National Democratic Party, being a longtime campaign volunteer for WA State Senators Patty Murray, Maria Cantwell, Betti Sheldon, and Kitsap County Commissioner Chris Endresen. He volunteered for the Salvation Army and the E.B.C.C. where he was a board member. With ongoing support to the service member groups Disabled American Veterans, V.F.W, and the American Legion. His favorite charities are St. Jude, National Wildlife Federation, and Salvation Army.

Tom's enjoyments during his Washington life years were hunting trips, day trips to Sequim & Hurricane Ridge, and camping at Wynoochee. Chopping wood, gardening & yard work was his "workout" of choice, he loved riding theme park rides (even those shady carnival ones at the Kitsap County Fair), busting George Family fireworks on the 4th & New Year's Eve, screaming at the Green Bay Packers on the telly, and going to the movies (yes still munching on black licorice). He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Someone that we were blessed to have in our lives,  and so thankful for all the time we got to have with him. We love you, we thank you, we will miss you Dad.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, his two children, grandchild Elizabeth Ivylani Marie Garcia; sister EveAnn and brother Thomas; son-in-law Chris Garcia and in-law Teresa Garcia, and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by nephew Keola Martinez; sister Carol Berg, and his parents Edward and Charlotte.

There will be a memorial service at the Masonic Temple of Bremerton, 878 5th Street Bremerton WA, 98337 Saturday, May 21st at 3 pm.

Tom pre-planned arrangements for his request to be cremated, as a Navy Veteran his honor guard service/internment will be held on a future date TBD at Tahoma National Cemetary in Kent WA.

Special thanks to all our friends & family for the "kokua": the visits, the comfort food, condolences, and thoughtful cards. To Tim & Alison at Cook Family Funeral Home for their help during this process. To the D.A.V. Chapter 5, and Ken's care team of doctors & nurses from St. Micheal's Hospital, Stafford Belmont, and Bainbridge Island Health & Rehab.
