Ken's obituary

In loving memory of Kai (“Ken”) Lum

1938 – 2025

It is with great sadness that the family of Kai Lum announce that he had quietly passed away

January 14, 2025, at home. We take great comfort in knowing he is at peace with his Heavenly

Father.

Kai, also known affectionally as “Ken” was born in Guangzhou, China. As a young boy, he

immigrated with his mother and his brothers to Toronto, Canada to reunite with his father who

had worked hard to bring them over.

Kai was soon able to learn English by visiting the church in his neighbourhood, and listening to

the pastor speak. A naturally gifted student, Kai won a number of awards in high school,

including the top prize for Latin, much to his delight. After graduating from the University of

Toronto in Mechanical Engineering, a lifelong career in aerospace research at the National

Research Council in Ottawa followed.

Kai was a very humble man with a gentle sense of humour. He was someone that people easily

liked and felt comfortable with. He loved to cook up big feasts of food for friends, including his

famous Chinese Melon soup, proudly served from the melon! Kai enjoyed gardening, reading,

and keeping on top of current events. Most of all, he enjoyed helping others where possible, and

loved to pass along alternative health tips. He always thought that keeping healthy was the most important aspect to life, as you could not be happy without being healthy.

He also came to know Jesus in his adult years. Kai’s faith and commitment to his church had a

profound impact on his life. He experienced great joy when his mom came to know the Lord in

her 80s, and she would often sing songs in her home from a Chinese hymn book.

Kai will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his children, Jeff (Lori) Lum, Lisa (Scott)

Rodgers, and their mother, Gloria Lum, and his daughter, Emilie Lum, and her mother,

Emmanuel [Last name]. He had four grandchildren, Meghan, Colin, Allie, and Jason that he

adored, and always marveled at their accomplishments. He will be missed by many other family

members and friends.
