Kelly showed me this video one day to explain to me what it was like to be someone from the midwest. It was of a person holding the door for someone who was entering the same location at the same time. There was the east coaster who just walked through the door, the west coaster who held the door for the person right behind them, and then there was the midwesterner. That midwesterner saw someone coming a block away and just waited a while at the door until the other person got close and held it open for them. Kelly was that person. She made people feel like she was their biggest fan. Kelly wasn't the only person I've known from the midwest, but I never met anyone who was as genuinely open hearted and gracious as her.

My family moved to Jonesville the beginning of our freshman year. This spitfire of a girl was in my homeroom. She had the most hair I think I had ever seen on someone. She was petite and boisterous and so full of energy she was practically bouncing off the walls of our classroom. She reminded me of a fairy creature, maybe a sprite. Kelly was warm and inviting, and I loved her right away. We did not hang out in the same circles -- truthfully, I was not part of a particular group and I always envied Kelly and her artistic group of friends. They were loyal to each other and seemed to be laughing and up to something. To me, Kelly was always the center of it. Over the years our ragtag bunch of classmates have come appreciate the gem we had in Kelly.  She accomplished so much and shared so much of herself with a generous spirit of love and inclusiveness. I know I will always miss her, but she remains in my thoughts and heart and will always be that little smiley sprite that welcomed me. Rest in peace, my friend.
