Kay's obituary
Kay Woodburn (82) passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 14th, 2021 at her home in Sahuarita, Arizona. There will be a graveside service at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 13th at the Speer family plot in the Greenmount Cemetery; followed by a “Celebration of Life” at Joe Italiano's Maplewood, located at 470 S. White Horse Pike in Hammonton, New Jersey. Family, friends, and colleagues are welcomed to attend both events and encouraged to share their memories of Kay.
Kay Speer was one of five sisters, born at her family’s home on Vine Street on June 4th, 1939, and later moved to Fairview Avenue in Hammonton, NJ. She married Karl Stein in February of 1961 and raised their three children in Mullica Township (Atlantic County), NJ. She worked for 25 years as the Superintendent’s secretary for the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District in Mays Landing, NJ, from 1979 to 2004. Over the years, Kay was an active member of a women’s group called the D.O.V.E.S., which helped to organize the EHC Halloween parade, sponsored a local softball team, and raised money for the March of Dimes in and around Egg Harbor City, New Jersey.
After retiring from GEHRHSD, Kay married her former sweetheart, Tim Woodburn; both members of the 1957 graduating class of Hammonton High School. Together, the couple moved to Fredericksburg, Texas, and then to Sahuarita, Arizona; where they spent their time traveling within the US, Mexico, and Canada, and even took a trip to Europe. This period was one of the happiest times in Kay’s life, fulfilling her dreams of adventure with the love of her life!
Kay is survived by her husband: Timothy Woodburn, 2 sisters: Myrna Santora (husband Frank Santora) and Betty Mastrangelo, along with her 3 children: Shari Murray (husband Neil Murray), Karla Curry, and Karl Stein (wife Marla Stein), and 7 grandchildren: Ian Murray (wife Kailie Murray), Kyle Murray (wife Courtney Murray), Connor Curry, Morgan Curry, Daisie Stein, Tristan Stein, and Sierra Stein; as well as her first great-grandchild: Sebastian Murray, and many generations of cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Kay left a lasting legacy of love and kindness in the hearts of everyone who met her. Those who knew her have described her as “a truly great lady” with a “genuinely good soul”; as well as “one of the sweetest and most-caring women” who “always had them laughing”. Flowers and donations can be sent in care of: Shari Murray at 4808 Old Egg Harbor Road, Devonshire, NJ 08215.
