Kay Welker McDermond, age 88, passed peacefully away on August 21st, 2024, after dealing with dementia and heart failure with pluckiness and humor. She was born in Logan, Utah to Ethan and Vesta Welker and raised in La Jolla, CA with her three sisters and two brothers. She returned to Utah as an adult and in 1960 she married Donald McDermond in Salt Lake City. She spent most of her adulthood there caring for her husband, her daughter Dawn, and her many dogs, cats, and birds. In 1999, she and Don retired to Mesquite, NV. She continued to enjoy Mesquite for many years after Don passed. When her health began to decline she moved to Winters, CA to live with her niece, Karen Krstich. Later, she moved to Bayfield, CO so she could be near her daughter, Dawn, Dawn’s husband, James Thomas, and her grandchildren, Ian and Beth, at Evening’s Porch Assisted Living. Her family is grateful for the care they and Mercy Hospice provided her. Kay spent her life finding joy in her family, friends, nature, walks, and critters. She may have been small in stature, but she was big in heart. Her family will fulfill her wishes by privately spreading her ashes in the roots of a tree so she can finally grow tall.
