Katie's obituary
Katie June Coble Stancil was a local musician and poet who transitioned from this life May 19th, to early dawn birdsong. She passed away one year and seven months after her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, Edwin Stancil, passed away (October 31, 2020).
As a Texas transplant to Gadsden, AL, Katie lived in the area on and off for over 50 years. She graduated with honors from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, TX, at the age of 15. She earned a BA in English, graduating and magna cum laude from Southwest Texas State College at the age of 18.
She had a storied background in education, and taught all ages from preschool to high school as an English teacher, piano teacher, and a professional development facilitator for educators. She even helped establish several Head Start programs in central Texas in the 1960’s.
In the late 50’s, she worked as a civil employee for the Air Force in Bryan, TX; in the 70’s and 80’s, Mrs. Stancil opened one of Gadsden’s first naturopath and herbal remedies stores, and was known around town as “The Herb Lady.”
Through the years, she played piano for the Gadsden Mountaintop Club, the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, was co-owner of the East Gadsden Animal Hospital with her husband Dr. Randolph S. Brown. She enjoyed playing piano, all things beautiful, watching and solving BBC murder mysteries, reading, visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Coca-cola, chocolate in every incarnation, and writing poetry.
Katie is survived by her son, Ray Carlson; her grandchildren Tabitha Carlson Bozeman (Jason), Tiffany Carlson Long (Cary), Josh Carlson (Tressa), Chris Carlson, and Tera Carlson Dick (Greg), Bennett Dobbins, Shawn McCallium, Kory McCallium, Logan Sparks; her chosen daughters Elisa Stancil (Zak), Susan (Marty) McCallium, Kathryn Sparks, and Julie Dobbins (Craig); and great-grand children Lakeland Wade, Addie Bozeman, Sylvia Bozeman, Olivia Bozeman, Julia Kate Long, Josceline Long, Jolene Long, Jude Long, Willa Gray, Joe Gray.
