Kathy's obituary

On January 18, 2024, the world lost a shining light as Kathy Mosgovoy O’Dell passed away at the age of 65. Kathy leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion and creativity that continues to touch the lives of everyone she encountered. Kathy was a beloved friend, mother, daughter and sister. Her warm and generous spirit endeared her to many, creating lasting bonds that transcended time and distance.

Kathy was born October 29, 1958 in Boulder, Colorado to Marylee and Walter Mosgovoy. Educated at the American School in London and Scripps College, Kathy’s enthusiasm extended beyond the classroom. As an honors student and cheerleader, she sang in high school choir groups and played roles in theatrical productions. Post-graduation, Kathy worked as a recruiter for Scripps before pursuing her passion for education. She earned an MA in Education from University of Colorado Denver in 1988 and embarked on a fulfilling career teaching 2nd grade at Bishop Elementary School. Over the last 25 years, Kathy served as a substitute teacher in Englewood and Littleton Public Schools, leaving an everlasting impression on countless students.

Family was at the heart of Kathy’s world. From her 40 year marriage, to her children and extended family, she emanated love and embodied the message that “it’s always easy to be kind.” Kathy was devoted to her two children, Holly and Nick. She poured her heart and soul into nurturing and supporting them throughout their lives. In Kathy’s home, every family occasion was honored and celebrated. She found joy and companionship in her furry friends—pugs Oscar and Wilbur—who walked loyally by her side.

Kathy’s generosity knew no bounds. Every Christmas, she and her children crafted special gifts following the theme of the 12 Days of Christmas, delivering joy anonymously for twelve days before revealing themselves. Her car was stocked with socks and granola bars, which she gave to the homeless at every opportunity. Devoted to various charities, Kathy supported the Denver Street School, sponsored Compassion children in Kenya, and championed the work of SEED A Better Life, aiding children in Rwanda.

Kathy’s love for her Bow Mar neighborhood showed in every aspect of her life. Sunday dinners at the beach were a tradition. Kathy shared her passion in two garden clubs. She was committed to her faith and participated in Bible studies, fostering faith among her neighbors. Her green thumb transformed gardens into vibrant landscapes and her fall zeal for planting thousands of bulbs became a legend. Everyone enjoyed driving by or getting a tour, especially in the spring when her tulips and daffodils bloomed. Kathy offered flowers from her garden to anyone who wanted them – “just bring a vase!”

Kathy deeply valued spiritual growth. For almost a decade, she crafted and taught classes covering topics that included gratitude, connecting with angels, fostering relationships, and quieting the mind. Through her classes, she touched the lives of countless women, including women at a local prison. Kathy’s Christian faith deepend as she faced her cancer diagnosis with grace, courage, and positivity. After her diagnosis, she began crafting and sending devotional messages to over 100 individuals, offering inspiring reflections that evolved into profound meditations shared multiple times a week.

Kathy was gifted with limitless artistic and creative talents. She graciously shared her knowledge, teaching watercolor painting to any friend who asked. Her calligraphy adorned letters, cards and invitations, reflecting the beauty she found in every detail. Kathy’s original lullabies, a musical heirloom for her children, illuminate the art of her motherhood. She even authored a book, drawing on years of journaling her children’s early words, thoughts and insights. "When Baby Learns to Talk" continues to encourage parents to capture the magic of their children’s minds as they develop.

An avid traveler, bike rider and walker, Kathy’s adventurous spirit led her to explore new horizons around the world. She had the rare gift of seeing the immense beauty in the world around her—and even rarer, the ability to fully embrace it. In her wake are countless memories that will be cherished by those fortunate enough to have walked the path with her.

Kathy is survived by her children, Nick O’Dell and Holly O’Dell-Schlenz, her granddaughter, Ember Schlenz, her sister and brother, Annette Swope and Paul Mosgovoy, and her mother, Marylee Mosgovoy.

Kathy O’Dell leaves a deep void in the lives of many. But through her legacy we remember that a life of love, kindness, spirituality, and creativity is one that knows no end. The celebration of her life bestows yet another joyful gift as we strive to carry forward her lively spirit of compassion and generosity. May we always remember that “it’s always easy to be kind.”

May she rest in peace, surrounded by the beauty she dearly appreciated, and may her memory continue to inspire and uplift those who were blessed to know her.
