Kathleen's obituary

Kathleen Fitzhugh Remitz, beloved wife, sister, and an advocate for youth literacy known as "Miss Kitty", passed away on July 8, 2024. Born on September 11, 1958, Kathleen lived a life characterized by wit, artistic creativity, and a deep devotion to the causes she held dear.

Kathleen was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Theresa Fitzhugh, and her youngest brother, Daniel Fitzhugh.   She is survived by her husband, Edward Remitz, her twin brother, Clifton Fitzhugh, her sister, Kristina Fitzhugh, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and thousands of "her library kids" in Marin County.

Known to scores of children and families as "Miss Kitty", a Marin County children's librarian for many decades, she encouraged and helped countless children and young adults to read.    Kathleen's heart for service was evident in her dedication to causes such as local artists, community libraries, and animals.

Kathleen's legacy of youth literacy is a testament to her tireless efforts to share the joy of reading with others. Miss Kitty will be remembered not just for her passion for life but for her dedication to making those lasting differences in the lives of others.

Her lessons to families and the community on how to encourage a reading child will continue to resonate with those who long since graduated from her "Children's Department" at the Marin Civic Center Library, and moved on to famed academic institutions or to share with her their own published works, including both the written and the artistic.

Miss Kitty considered her greatest life rewards to be when "her library kids" returned to see her or wrote to her as accomplished adults, thanking her for her early influence.

Her family and friends will remember her for her vibrant personality and zest for an expressive, artistic life. She had a fashionable wardrobe with a pair of unique eyeglasses for every season, look or occasion.  Kathleen was known to enjoy a good book, a colorful art exhibit, beautiful gardens, a well-made Cosmopolitan, a gourmet charcuterie board, and delighting in simple pleasures, particularly creating art and a good afternoon nap.  Kathleen frequently commandeered the shared office space at home (with Ed's encouragement), so she could work on her latest art piece (not infrequently from sunset to sunrise).  The afternoon naps necessarily followed her all-night art sessions.

Kathleen had a passion for exploring new places. Her favorite destinations included Hawaii, where her family lived for many decades, Palm Springs, and California's mountain, coastal and wine regions. Her love for local exploration was also evident as she found joy in local spots such as San Francisco, Sausalito, Napa, and Lake Tahoe. A love for local art and exhibits often marked her travels.    A global cruise in 2025 was her next itinerary.

Her family, friends, and the community mourn her loss.     Kathleen's ashes are swirling, like her beautiful art, in the deep blue waters of Kona, Lake Tahoe, and the San Francisco Bay.
