Kathleen's obituary
Kathleen (Kathy) Rose Owings-Jones, 85, died peacefully at home on September 15, 2022. She was born June 19, 1937 in Spokane, but spent much of her life in Guam before retiring in Spokane. Kathy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Jones as well as her parents, Hubert Walter and Lena Pinkerton Walter.
Kathy graduated from North Central High School, class of 1954. She received a BA in English from California State University in 1964 and an M.A. in Education (English) from the University of Guam in 1971. She served the University of Guam in a full-time faculty and administrator role for 26 years; retiring as an Associate Professor and Dean of Admissions. She was granted Professor Emerita Status in 1999 and continued to support the University and various educational causes until her death.
She is survived by her two sons (Philip and Tim Owings) and their spouses and children, as well as her cousins, friends, and extended family members across the globe.
She was a fierce advocate for women’s education and was well known for her love for all things feline, social justice causes, and a great crossword puzzle.
Kathy was loved so much and will be missed more than we can say. In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to remember her kindness, loyalty, and compassion by supporting one of the many organizations she believed in, including animal welfare organizations, JDRF, or youth education programs.
Please share your photos and memories of Kathy on this page – we’d love to see them.
