Kathleen's obituary
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Kathleen Olivero, MPS, on November 16, 2024. Born on November 14, 1942, Kathleen was a beloved mother, scholar, and kind soul who left an indelible mark on the lives of those she touched. She grew up in Florida (Hialeah), and after marrying her high school sweetheart in 1961, lived large parts of her life at a number of college towns, including Tallahassee FL, Williamsburg VA, Ann Arbor MI, Gainesville FL, State College PA, Boulder CO, and finished her life in Daytona Beach FL.
Survivors include her brother Gary Platt and sister-in-law Suzanne Platt, sister-in-law Sandra Albrecht and brother-in-law John Albrecht. Her daughters Lisa Olivero and Mary Connor, and her sons Michael Olivero and his wife Angie, and David Olivero and his wife Margaret. Kathleen's cherished grandchildren include Lucas, Casey, and Skye (and Skye's husband Max).
Kathleen was predeceased by her loving parents, Lillie Frances (Frankie)Platt and Andrew Belton (Tony) Platt. A widow of 14 months, Kathleen was predeceased last year by her devoted husband of 62 years, Dr. John J Olivero, PhD.
Kathleen was an introverted bookworm with a vast creative streak, a seeker of spiritual truth, a lover of theater and art, and of nature and animals in equal measure. Her life was a testament to her belief in the importance of perseverance in the face of personal challenges and the pursuit of spiritual growth. Education was her lifelong passion: she started a Montessori-like daycare in her home, worked in the public school system, and later became the founding director of religious education for Good Shepherd Catholic Church in State College, PA.
One of Kathleen's key traits was her selfless adoption and hosting of needy animals and people. Her holiday tables always included those unable to be with family, and students and colleagues of her husband were always welcomed into the fold. A returning adult student to Penn State University, Kathleen had the courage and determination to pursue her academic dreams after her children were launched, a feat that speaks volumes about her strength and resolve. She earned a B.S. in Rehabilitation Education at Penn State, began graduate studies at St Francis College in Loretto PA, and then earned her Master of Pastoral Studies degree from Loyola University of New Orleans.
Kathleen's legacy is deeply intertwined with her love of literature as well; she passionately collected books and over the years placed countless books into the hands of children and adults alike. And when reading became more challenging in late life, she enjoyed having several of her favorite books read aloud to her by her children. Many have been graded by her kindness, her ability to listen and love without judgement, her love of life, and her graciousness. In the last several years of Kathleen's life, the fierce love and loyalty shown to her by her dedicated caregivers truly reflects her full-hearted character.
