Billye's obituary

Kathleen "Billye" Carter, 92, of Tacoma, WA, passed away on July 25, 2022 in Severn, MD of natural causes.

Billye was born on February 22, 1930 to Samuel and Mary McKnight Bost in Kannapolis, NC. After graduating from high school, she went on to study Biology at Johnson C. Smith University.   After graduation, she landed her first job at Sloan-Kettering.

In 1950, she met Lee Carter, and they wed that same year, going on to have two children, Lynne and Bruce. Shortly after Billye had Lynne, the family moved to Leipheim, Germany where they lived for three years. Billye's role as a US Army spouse afforded her the opportunity to travel extensively (two subsequent tours to Germany).  She changed her career goals because of the frequent relocation and followed in the footsteps of many of her family members into teaching.  Teaching soon became her passion.   She excelled at guiding new educators and students.  She spent her last three years of teaching at the American International School in Lagos, Nigeria.  Whether that was supporting a student, her family or a friend through difficulty, she made it her mission to improve the lives of others.

She loved to travel; she actually resided on three continents and visited almost every other continent.  Billye was a passionate person and when she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found in out in the community working for NAMI. To say that she'll be truly missed is an understatement.

Her last three years were spent living with her granddaughter, Stacey, Stacey's husband Michael Joseph, and Billye's great-grandson, Michael.  During her time spent with them, she visited with a many of her cousins, nieces and nephews.

Billye is survived by her daughter (Lynne) and son (Bruce), granddaughter and her husband (Stacey and Michael) and great-grandson (Michael), and "special friends" such as the Pecolia Coley family.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in her name to one of the following organizations:  NAMI Washington, or Johnson C. Smith University.
