Personal note from Rachel

Katherine Brown's Memorial service/ Celebration of Life
Day/time: Sunday July 14; 2pm
Location — Eden’s garden
Barnstable Friend Meeting
Corner of Rt. 6A, & Dr. Lords Rd. (2 Dr. Lords Rd.}
Dennis, MA 02638
………………..
A Friend’s memorial service is a time to express gratitude for s people enter they will see plenty of flowers and something set up that can display photos or anything else family wishes. People will be directed to a tent that has chairs set up in rows with two rows facing the other chairs. They will be informed that the facing chairs are for family and close friends if they so choose.

Once a couple people are seated, the service has started so as others enter they will be asked to enter quietly. After it seems most people who will be coming have arrived and are seated, the host (Rachel), will give a brief welcome explaining that after a period a silent worship or contemplation, everyone who chooses is invited to stand, go to the microphone and speak as they are lead. After they return to their seat, a period of silence will take place before the next speaker. After this explanation, the host might also read Katherine Brown’s memorial minute. This is similar to the obituary yet different in that the memorial minute speaks to how Spirit has been revealed in the life of this Friend. Anyone who thinking they will be uncomfortable with the silence is encouraged to bring reading material or choose something from a table that will be set up with various, assorted reading materials.

It will be explained that if two or more people stand to speak at the same time, priority will be given first to family members (generally from oldest to youngest) and second to close friend. The other person/people are asked to return to a seated position so there will be no line forming waiting for a turn. If two or more people who are not family or close friends stand to speak at the same time, the host will invite them one at a time to come forward to the microphone.

People are very welcome to prepare remarks ahead of time. They can bring with them what they intend to read, or a poem or whatever moves the individual. No one is required to speak. People who have something they would like said but are not comfortable speaking themselves can ask someone else to give the message.

The service continues until everyone who wishes to has had a chance to speak. When it seems like this has happened the host will check-in with family and close friends. The service ends, usually within an hour depending on the number in attendance who wish to speak, with the shaking of hands.

Afterward there will be light refreshments.
