It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Karunanithy Velmurugu on November 10, 2025. Born on June 29, 1964, he was the personification of personal, academic, and professional excellence. A devoted husband, nurturing father, and esteemed scholar, he touched the lives of everyone he met with his caring, genuine, generous and fun personality.
He is survived by his beloved wife, T. Karunanithy, and their beautiful children; daughters Brooklyn Trusty-Karunanithy and Lilleyanna Karunanithy of Georgia, and sons Harris Karunanithy of Chennai (India) and Uthayasuriyan Karunanithy of Georgia. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Annama Velmurugu and Velmurugu Sinnathambi, and his cherished brother, Uthayasooriyan Velmurugu.
Dr. Karunanithy lived life with an unmatched vibrancy and zest. He took pleasure in simple things, such as savoring his favorite seafood and fresh vegetables, or enjoying an ice cold lemonade on a sunny day. His eclectic taste in music spanned from Ilayarajah and AR Rahman to Sid Sriram and Jay-Z. A film enthusiast, he held Saivam, Hitchki, and Tooffan close to his heart. An avid Alabama CRIMSON TIDE fan, he lived for the exhilaration of the game and shared this passion with his family.
His love for travel was evident in his favorite vacation spots, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka and road trips in the United States. The colors of red, rose, and gold held a special place in his heart, as they perfectly encapsulated his vibrant spirit. Above all, Dr. Karunanithy believed in experiential learning—following the mantra "Try everything!"—which he gladly shared as one of his best life lessons.
His legacy—a beautiful blend of kindness, generosity, and academic excellence—will live on through his loving family, friends, and the countless lives he's touched. Dr. Karunanithy Velmurugu's life and accomplishments are a testament to his unwavering commitment to his family, community, and profession. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who were privileged to know him.
