It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Karen Whelan on February 18, 2026. Born on April 25, 1946, Karen lived a life full of intensity, righteousness, kindness, and dedication.
Karen was a beloved figure in her community, most notably for her impact as a teacher in the Wappingers Central School District at Roy C. Ketchum High School. Winning multiple awards, she poured her heart and soul into shaping young minds. She is fondly remembered by her students for her tenacity and spirit. Karen instilled in all those around her the importance of resilience and justice. Her mantra in life was to never give up and to always do the right thing, a lesson she consistently imparted to all those around her.
Karen's legacy is one of inquisitiveness, fierce kindness, generosity, and an unwavering love of learning. Her passion for education was matched only by her love for travel and adventure. She was captivated by the beauty of the natural world and was an avid mountain climber. She believed in protecting what she loved with passion.
Karen is survived by her patient and devoted husband, Bob, her loving daughter, Lucia, her sister Joanne, and her brother Kevin. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.
Let us remember Karen not with sorrow, but with gratitude for her extraordinary life. She has left an indelible mark on all those who were fortunate enough to know her.
