Karen's obituary

Karen Marie (Bass) Vasconcellos, age 54, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday July 13, 2023 at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado. She was born to Linda (Bass) Christensen on November 20, 1968, in Melrose Park, Illinois. She grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, frequently visiting family in nearby Wisconsin. After graduating from Prospect High School in Mount Prospect, Illinois, she attended Illinois State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy in 1990. Karen married Jon Vasconcellos on March 6, 1999.

Professionally, Karen worked as Senior Manager for KPMG and as Controller at the cruise ship company The World, which took her to Norway for seven months, and then to Miami, Florida.

Her first daughter, Julia Marie, was born in South Miami, Florida. The family then moved to Barrington, Illinois, where her youngest, Krista Nicole, was born. Finally, the family settled in Flower Mound, Texas.

While Karen had many passions, three of the most influential were volunteering, marching band, and travel. She loved giving the gift of her time and energy to good causes and was always ready to help others in need. She was also an avid part of her daughters’ interests, especially marching band, which always held a special place in her heart. She greatly enjoyed traveling to her daughters’ band performances, watching them at the Super Regionals, Grand Nationals and State finals competitions. She especially appreciated watching the band march in the Rose Parade, something she also did in high school. In addition, she relished helping with whatever was needed and creating elaborate outfits to coordinate with their band shows. Karen also loved to travel; she traveled to all fifty states with her family and documented it with a map and pictures from each state that she lovingly arranged on the wall.

Karen will be remembered for her humility, generous and loving nature, and legendary sense of organization. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Jon (55), and daughters Julia (20) and Krista (18) in Highland Village, Texas; her mother Linda and stepfather Rich, of Estero, Florida; her brother Steve (Lindsey) and nieces Abby and Callie of Roselle, Illinois; stepbrother Scott (Amy) and nephew Garrett of Hinsdale, Illinois; and aunt Patti (Turner) of Phoenix, Arizona.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at Flower Mound United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM, followed by a celebration of life from 12:00-2:00 PM. The church is located at 3590 Bruton Orand Boulevard, Flower Mound, Texas, 75022.

In lieu of floral arrangements, donations can be made to the American Brain Tumor Association (https://give.abta.org/fundrai…) and the Fort Worth Zoo (https://www.fortworthzoo.org/…)
