Karen's obituary
Karen Louise (Holiway) Louis, beloved mother and community advocate, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2024, at the age of 66. Born on January 4, 1958, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Major and Supreen Holiway, Karen was the middle child of five siblings. From a young age, she was known for her quiet nature and love of reading—a passion that stayed with her throughout her life.
Karen graduated from Paseo High School in 1976 and soon after, in 1978, married her high school sweetheart, Byron Louis. Their life together was filled with love and adventure, relocating from Kansas City to Nebraska, and eventually settling in Colorado, where they raised their two daughters, Khalilah and Vanessa.
A natural entrepreneur with a deep passion for early childhood education, Karen became the proud owner and operator of TLC Unlimited, a licensed in-home daycare. For over 15 years, she dedicated herself to nurturing young minds and creating a warm, loving environment where children and families felt supported and valued.
Karen’s entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond childcare. She was the founder of Divine Visions and Goals, an event planning and catering business. Known for her delicious German chocolate and carrot cakes, Karen brought joy to countless events with her keen eye for detail and commitment to excellence. She also devoted many years to empowering women through her successful Avon sales business and served as the Director and Recording Secretary of The Alliance of Black Telecommunications Professionals.
Karen’s heart for service and social justice was evident in all she did. Whether feeding the homeless, serving as a Lay Counselor, or advocating for marginalized women and children, Karen's love for God and her community was unwavering. She found joy in drumming with local African drum circles and was an active participant in her church and community, organizing events that uplifted the African American community.
Beyond her professional achievements, Karen will be remembered for her boundless energy, vivacious spirit, and unwavering support for those she loved. She was a gifted poet, often brightening the lives of those around her with her uplifting words and infectious smile. Karen cherished time with her family, whether hosting card parties, celebrating holidays, or enjoying game nights filled with laughter and love. Her warm, passionate, and caring nature left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Karen is survived by her daughters, Dr. Khalilah (Jayson) Louis Caines and Vanessa (John-David) Louis-Woolley, her siblings Denise and Paul Holiway, along with a host of family members and dear friends who will miss her joyful presence and generous heart. She is preceded in death by her parents, Major and Supreen Holiway, her siblings, Michael and David Holiway, her former spouse, Byron Louis, and other extended family members who are sorely missed.
A celebration of Karen’s life will be held on October 1, 2024, at Quebec Place at Fairmount. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to The Denver Hospice.
