Karen's obituary

We are heartbroken to share that Karen Krieger, 71, of Midland, Michigan left this world for the next on April 23, 2021 after a brief battle with cancer.

Karen was born in 1949 to parents Mary and Gerald. She was the eldest of eight children. Helping care for her younger brothers and sisters brought meaning to Karen's life growing up. She found her passion in caring for others and went on to study medicine, earning first her nursing degree followed by a Medical Doctor degree. She had a long career working in healthcare.

Karen enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies throughout her life, including music, swimming, hiking, sewing, photography, cross country skiing and sailing, to name a few. She did not let fear of failure deter her from trying new things. Her grand life adventures included a backpacking trip to the Rocky Mountains, sailing around Lake Michigan on her International 470 sailboat and even a brief stint in flight school.

Above all else, Karen will be remembered for being a loving and dedicated mother. She raised four children and caring for them was the great passion of her life. Karen poured her heart and soul into educating her children, providing for them, and ensuring they had a safe and happy childhood. She would proudly recount her adult children's life accomplishments to anyone who would listen.

Karen also cherished being a grandmother. She was blessed with four, soon to be five, young grandchildren who lovingly called her "Nana." Distance, Karen's health and the Covid pandemic made recent visits precious few, but technology allowed them to keep in touch. Karen's face would light up wherever the grandkids called to video chat. She would cheerily talk to them and patiently listen to their excited little voices, no matter how tired or uncomfortable she felt.

Karen met her unexpected cancer diagnosis with bravery and grace, bolstered by an unwavering faith in God that has seen her through numerous life hardships. A devout Catholic and longtime parishioner of Blessed Sacrament church in Midland, Karen shared her love of Christ and the teachings of the Church with many in her life. She looked forward to joining the saints and angels in Heaven and insisted we shouldn't mourn her passing but rather celebrate her arrival home with the Lord. We take comfort in our hope that she is watching over us from the other side, freed from every pain and suffering, until we meet again.

Karen joins her mother, Mary; her father, Gerald; her brother, Gregory; and her sister, Kristine, in Heaven. She is survived by her children, Carolyn, Katherine, Andrew and Mary; her grandchildren, Matthew, Thomas, Zachary and Hannah; and her siblings, Gary, Mark, Mary Ann, Tony and John.
