Karen's obituary

Karen Denise Greenwood, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2024, after courageously facing a complicated five-year health battle. With her family by her side, she left this earth covered with love and went on to receive her heavenly healing.

Born on December 13, 1962 to Herman and Betty Jo Sprayberry of Weaver, AL, Karen was a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew her. She was a strong woman of faith, a devoted Auburn football fan, and an avid lover of all things Disney.

Karen touched the lives of many through her work in various roles, most notably as a Switchboard Operator at Craftmaster Printers in Opelika, AL; School Librarian Assistant in Sylacauga, AL; Leasing Agent at Northcutt Realty in Auburn, AL; and a Vacation Planner at Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, FL. She also lovingly served in various church congregations for over 30 years alongside her husband in his time as a Methodist minister.

Karen would greet anyone she met with the biggest and warmest embrace, saying “I’m a hugger!” She will always be remembered for her vibrant spirit, sweet smile, infectious laugh, and fierce love for her family and friends. Karen will be deeply missed but she leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will never be forgotten.

Preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and other loved ones, Karen is survived by her husband, Alan Scott Greenwood; her two daughters and their husbands, Elana Denise Greenwood (Jasveer) and Ariel Marie Greenwood (Matthew); her brothers James Michael “Mike” Sprayberry (Jeannie) and Rodney Owen Sprayberry (Lisa); her sister Trina Ann Bell; her “grandkitties” as she called them, Lucy and Bagheera; as well as countless additional beloved family members and friends.

In accordance with her wishes, Karen's body was donated to science to help future generations through research and education. She wanted to be able to continue to touch lives and help people even beyond her time here on earth.

A celebration of Karen’s life will be held in Weaver, AL later this year on her birthday, December 13th. Details of the ceremony will be shared at a later date.
