Kamal's obituary
We regretfully announce the passing of Dr. Kamal El-Sheikh on August 4, 2021. Kamal was surrounded by his loved ones at home and transitioned peacefully.
While we mourn the loss of our dear husband, father, jeddo, uncle, and friend, we also celebrate and remember the beauty and light that he brought to this world. Born in Cairo, Egypt, Kamal was a curious and studious child, who worked tirelessly to build a successful and distinguished future. In his adult years he dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge in the field of nuclear engineering. A graduate of Cairo University, he taught at Asout University, and then embarked to the University of Michigan where he obtained his PhD in Nuclear Engineering in 1974. Passionate about his field of work, he enjoyed nearly 30 years at General Electric, and 10 years owning his consultancy firm, and ended his career as a highly respected expert in the field of risk and safety of nuclear reactors.
Kamal met his beloved Ghada in San Jose, California and wed in 1976. His children were the center of his life. For Kamal, family extended beyond blood lines, and his home was always open to all – relatives, friends, friends of friends, acquaintances. He was an incredible chef and loved a full house and good dinner party – of which he hosted many. Kamal embraced and loved life – people, music, poetry, science and nature. His children remember waking up Saturday mornings to the smell of eggs and pancakes and the blast of opera music, and his voice singing along to his favorite Abdel Wahab songs during long car rides where he would pause only ask everyone to take in the beautiful scenery of San Jose’s foothills. Even in his last days, he wished for a house full of family and friends, and it probably was no coincidence that he was surrounded by many loved ones at the time of his transition.
Anyone who knew Kamal will remember his generosity, kindness, warm and infectious smile, calm and loving demeanor, delicious food, loyalty, and deep commitment to serving others.
We thank you for the outpouring of love and support from all those who loved him.
