I knew Walt in high school and shortly after high school (early adult years). I lived down the street from his family for a time (Balmoral Ave, Union City CA). Walt was a fierce competitor. We had some epic basketball games in the neighborhood and at the outdoor courts at James Logan High. Even back then, Walt had a big heart. I recall getting kicked out of the house for a time and needing a place to sleep at night. Walt gave up his giant bean bag chair in his room and let me crash there until I got my act together. He will be missed.

My condolences to the family of Walt. I wish I could contribute more. He was a wonderful guy who made people smile.

Walter was my daughterβs bus driver and I appreciated him so much. He cared for these kids on his bus and taught them respect and kept them safe every single day. Β He knew their names and the kids all felt as if they knew Walter too. He was a teacher and a friend. Their bus rides just wonβt be the sameΒ . I was heartbroken when I heard the news of his passing as are the children and other parents. I am so sorry for his children and grandchildren who now have to go on without him. I pray for you and find peace in knowing you will see him again.Β

Big Walt didnβt have to be the principal or head coach or even a teacher to be a great role model for us at DV. He took time to get to know us, and that built credibility when heβd give us stern, fatherly talks. He got on my nerves a few times when heβd call me out on my BS and immaturity, but as an adult now, I appreciate his presence in my life as a teen. I think thatβs the sign of a good man with the foresight and wisdom to do whatβs right for the youth, whether theyβre his kids or not. As a parent myself trying to be present in my kidsβ communities, whether itβs school or sports, Iβm so thankful for Big Waltβs influence. He didnβt need to be extra or try hard to be βthe cool dad,β he just genuinely cared, and the impact he made was just a by product. I canβt imagine how different DV from 01-05 would be without Big Walt. Walt and Kalana, I love you guys, and Iβll pray for your familyβs healing and for your dadβs wonderful soul. RIP Big Walt.

Walt was my neighbor, we grew up on Balmoral in Union City. So many memories, he was a good guy, a little crazy but passionate. Mostly, he loved his family and talked about his kids and grandkids all the time. Gone to soon, prayers to his family ππΌππΌ
