June's obituary

June Tzu-Yung Lin, 91, of Aliso Viejo, CA, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

June was born Tzu-Yung Ho on January 21, 1934, in Lotung, Taiwan, the daughter of Chi-Shang Lin and Ah-Tsao Ho-Chai. She graduated from Taipei Girls’ Normal School (teachers’ school) in 1952. From 1952 to 1964, she taught elementary school in Lotung and Taipei, Taiwan.

June married Hong-Chien (H.C.) Lin on July 25, 1960, in Lotung. They had first met as junior high classmates.

The couple initially lived in Taipei, where their first child was born. From 1964 to 1969, they made their home in New York City. The Lins’ adventures in the Big Apple in the 1960s were followed by round-the-world moves back to Taipei and then back again to the US (this time to Waconia, MN) in about 18 months, by then with three children under 10 in tow. They eventually settled in Mattoon, IL, in 1972, where H.C. practiced medicine and they lived until retiring to California in 1999.

June rolled with it all. Through the family’s early moves, she managed and supported the children’s transitions and adjustments even as she was learning English herself (her fourth language) by watching daytime TV, plus learning to drive. She made new friends in new communities repeatedly and adjusted to American life. At the same time, she encouraged and supported her children in their academics, friendships, and busy extracurricular activities. She juggled life with grace and a bright smile, all while styled in the latest fashions.

June was a brilliant cook who enjoyed gardening, light hiking, volleyball, fashion, reading, classical music, movies, dancing, flower arranging, leatherwork, and Jazzercise, which she faithfully attended for over 40 years (until she was 89!). When her children grew older, she took calculus for fun at the local community college, as well as classes to improve her English. During the Lins’ decades in Mattoon, they attended the First Presbyterian Church.

June loved Japanese and Taiwanese culture and was an avid traveler. She and H.C. traveled to six continents and enjoyed exploring the world with a spirit of adventure well into their 80s. Every spring, June sought out cherry blossoms, even traveling regularly to Japan to admire them. After retiring in California, June was active in the Orange County Taiwanese Association for many years. She ardently advocated self-determination for Taiwan and followed Taiwanese politics all her life.

Cherishing June’s memory are her husband, Hong-Chien, of Aliso Viejo, CA; her children, Henry (Linda) of Spokane, WA; George of Silver Spring, MD; and Margaret of Dana Point, CA; her grandchildren, Marie (Aidan) of Denver; Nicholas (Peyton) of Chicago; and Michael of St. Louis; and many extended family members in the US and Taiwan.

She will be interred at Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach, CA, on December 12. A memorial service and reception will take place on December 13 at 11:00am at The Covington in Aliso Viejo, CA.
