Julie's obituary
Julie Ann Tennant entered this world as the first child of Emma and Jule Volcy on December 25, 1958 in Pasadena California. Her earthly journey ended on August 13, 2024, as she transitioned peacefully in her sleep.
She was married to Melvin Tennant, II for 36 years from which one child, Melanie, came from that union. She was previously married to Carl Williams and one child, Carla, was born. Julie was also a stepmother to Caroline, Matthew, and Brian Tennant. She is survived by her youngest brother, Rodney Gholar, 12 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
Julie was an uninhibited and impulsive individual, and while small in stature, she had no fear. . She had a love of cruises, gadgets, jellybeans, cars and her loyal canine companion, Toi. She worked in hospitality, banking, and manufacturing in her professional life, and she brought energy and drive to each of her workplaces. In her personal life, no matter if she met someone once or many times, her presence and impact was felt long after. Her infectious smile, laugh and exorbitant energy is always one to remember. Her happiness stemmed from social settings, being a leader and caring for others more than herself.
Julie also had a genuine love for horror films, musicals and a wide-ranging musical taste that spanned multiple genres and eras. She proudly recounts the story of being called up on stage to sing with the Temptations when she attended one of their concerts. She’s also attended concerts by Aerosmith, Prince and The Rolling Stones. Often you can find her with her headphones in, listening to a curated playlist that includes Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, New Edition, Jimi Hendrix, and AC-DC, to name a few. She shared her passion for music with others by riding around with her car speakers’ volume on the highest setting or impromptu karaoke sessions out in public.
While she was not able to work for several years, she had a passion for volunteering in human services. Her most joyous volunteer work was with unsheltered individuals who had no other places to go for help. Her self-funded, one-person ministry, Church Without Walls, helped thousands of people over the years. Julie would go multiple days every week regardless of the weather and often risked her own health to help others. Her garage resembled a Sam’s Club as she stockpiled packaged foods, socks, shirts, ponchos, toiletries, and any other items she felt her “angels” – as she called them – might need. She also tutored, worked to help battered women, and assisted in food distribution at food shelves, among her many God-directed responsibilities.
She was predeceased by her parents, Emma and Jule, and her brothers Ronald, Lydell, and Jule, Jr.
As one who enjoyed being a non-conformist and who brought a predictably unpredictable approach to life, we will miss her. May she rest in peace in the arms of her Creator who has taken away all of her pain.
Julie’s celebration of life will take place on Saturday, August 24, 2024 in Shreveport, Louisiana, the birthplace of both of her parents. Precious Memories Mortuary is serving the family.
