Julie's obituary

Julie Lynn Huyett (Nesbitt) Myers, of Independence, Missouri, passed away, with her loving husband Larry by her side, at Center Point Hospital on May 3, 2023. She was 64.

Her wild, passionate and playful spirit lives on in her five children: T.J., Lisa, Katie, David and Joyce; 14 grandchildren, and a great granddaughter. She also leaves her five siblings: Rick, Joyce, Doug, David and Joe.

The fourth of six children, she was born on September 27, 1958, in Hagerstown, Maryland. She learned early on how to make her presence known, through mischief, singing, and telling of such unbelievable stories that family and friends could only lean in closer to make sure they heard every detail. Yes, there were fairies in the woods. Yes, there was an angel by the bedroom window. Yes, there was a snake at the swimming hole on the mountain property!

Her musical talent was evident from a young age, with her powerful singing voice, and the gift of perfect pitch. She joined the celebrated Bells & Beaus singers at Southwest High School in Kansas City, MO, and became the lead singer in her brother Rick’s band, Eden, captivating audiences with her renditions of rock songs and classics including Summertime, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and others. She also played the piano, violin and viola, and could play from memory piano pieces she learned as a child, including Fur Elise and Spinning Song. While living in Texas, she was involved with local theater and played viola in the orchestra. Throughout her life, on a moment’s notice, she could and would belt out songs from musicals such as The Sound of Music, The King & I, Jesus Christ Superstar, and My Fair Lady.

When her children were very young, she delighted in entertaining and educating them in imaginative ways such as lining up all the dining room chairs to resemble a passenger car on a train. As she announced each destination, her children would call out the sights along the way. And all would laugh as they made the sounds of the train. ALL ABOARD!!! DENVER is our next stop! Prepare yourselves for the GREAT ROCKY MOUNTAINS AHEAD! Her sister Joyce remembers dropping by one afternoon, when she was urged to hurry up and climb aboard, as they were about to leave the station.

Road trips never got boring. She was always up for the Alphabet Game and naming all 50 states, which is way harder than it sounds. Going on a lion hunt was in regular rotation as well. On long drives the radio was off and the car was always filled with laughter.

Right after moving the family into a new house on Brookside, as the kids were settling in, she secretly set up all of the Cabbage Patch dolls in a bedroom in front of the TV. Mom - what is going on? They must have come alive!

A lover of glazed doughnuts, Julie was known to call friends or family to announce that the next batch of Winchell’s doughnuts would be ready at 9 pm, and to meet her then and there, so they could buy a dozen and devour them while still warm. Once on the way back from a Winchell’s trip with her daughter Lisa her little yellow Chevette broke down. Not a crisis - they ate the entire dozen on the walk home. Yes, it was a thing. With her.

We can now easily imagine Julie at peace…or perhaps singing songs from Jesus Christ Superstar with JC himself. While the angels smile, dance and sing along.
