Judy's obituary
Judy Wayne Shute, 80
Died October 5, 2024
Judy Wayne Cunningham was born on September 14, 1944 to parents Betty June (née
Dickman) and Roger Wayne Cunningham in Chillicothe, Missouri. Her older brother Steven
was born in 1942. The family resided in Chillicothe until 1954 when they moved to midtown
Kansas City, Missouri.
Judy graduated from Westport High School in 1962 and worked in the city most often as
a secretary. Judy met Austin Shute in 1969 and they married in 1970. Austin was a criminal
defense and civil rights attorney in Kansas City, and Judy joined him in a busy, interesting social
life in the area. Austin and Judy had two children together: Carrie Beth in July of 1971 and
Shannon Nicole in February of 1974. They settled into south Kansas City with Austin’s five
children Michael, Daniel, David, Becky and Austin Jr.
Austin and Judy loved to bowl, play cards and travel. Their favorite vacation destination
was Siesta Key near Sarasota, Florida, where they spent many days in the sun, sand, and surf
with their kids and grandkids.
Judy worked for many years at Catholic Charities. Her office resided at the St. Catherine
of Siena Parish. Her proudest work was in coordinating the Special Religious Education
(SPRED) program at the parish where she mentored developmentally disabled children and
young adults in religious education and sacramental preparation.
Judy is survived by daughter Carrie Dimino and partner Brandon Funk, daughter
Shannon Howe and husband Jeff Howe; stepson Michael Shute and wife Rhoda, stepson David
Shute and wife Joy, and stepson Austin Shute Jr.; grandsons Ryan, Casey, Matt, Parker, Jacob,
Wambli, Nicholas, Zenon, Miles, Benjamin, and granddaughter Molly; brother Steve
Cunningham and his wife Jane.
She was preceded in death by her husband Austin, stepson Daniel, and stepdaughter
Becky.
Donations in Judy’s remembrance may be made to the Knights of Columbus.
