Judy's obituary

Judy A. Lowe, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024, at the age of 78, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on May 12, 1946, in Kendallville, Indiana, Judy was the eldest of six children born to Ernest and Dolores Emerick. After graduating from high school in Waterloo, Indiana in 1964, Judy joined the Air Force where after basic training, was stationed at March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA. It was here where she met and married Jim Lowe. Jim and Judy were married in July of 1965 and were just seven months shy of their 60th wedding anniversary. Together they had two daughters, Lori and Lisa. Their small family of four grew over the years to include two sons-in-law, six grandchildren and their spouses, and 7 great-grandchildren.

Jim and Judy moved from the Coachella Valley to Blythe in 1978 where Judy spent most of her life. Over the years, she worked for Massey Sand and Rock, Arakelian Farms, and Ironwood State Prison, retiring from the latter in 2002.

Judy spent her time making wonderful memories with her family and friends and serving the small town that she loved so much. Throughout her 46 years in Blythe, she was actively involved in many organizations. Shortly after moving to the community, she joined the Beta Sigma Phi sorority where she made many lifelong friends. In the late 70’s and early 80’s Judy was a Girl Scout leader. Her daughters have many fond memories of the time they spent together working on projects, taking trips, learning skills, and of course enjoying those girl scout cookies.

She and Jim were/are very active members with the BPO Elks organization, where Judy was one of the first women to be inducted to the Blythe chapter after the organization lifted the men only membership requirement in 1995. She held roles of both Secretary and Treasurer during her membership but was also actively involved for decades prior to becoming an official member. She also volunteered with Jim at Harmony Kitchen, serving meals to the community.

Summer months were spent relaxing by the river at Mayflower Park, with a book in her hand, and winter months were often spent camping in the desert. In her later years her love for quilting came to life. She spent much of her time making beautiful quilts for her family, teaching her grandchildren how to sew, selling her creations at the street festivals, donating several quilts for various fundraising events, and making friends that she loved very much.

Judy is survived by her husband Jim Lowe of Blythe, California, daughter Lori Denewiler (Flint) of Mesa, Arizona, and daughter Lisa Holmes (Brian) of Barstow, California; grandchildren Candice, Aleisha, Ryan, Alix, Brendan, and Julia, and seven great-grandchildren; sister Sally Kessler, and brothers Russell (Marge) and Robert (Bev) Emerick, all of Auburn, Indiana.

She is preceded in death by her parents Dolores and Ernest Emerick, brothers Victor and Thomas Emerick, brother-in-law Gene Kessler, and sister-in-law Pamela Emerick.

Judy's love for her family is by far her legacy. Her husband was her soul mate, her sister Sally was her best friend, her daughters she lived for, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her happiness. She was the thread in the quilt of life she designed for us. We, her family, will forever be grateful that she loved us so completely.

A celebration of Judy’s life will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Blythe Elks Lodge, 244 W. Hobsonway, Blythe, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the California-Hawaii Elks Association, Major Projects Fund.
