Judith's obituary

Judith “Judy” Rock (nee Gulliver), born December 17, 1955, of Tinley Park, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on December 14, 2020, following a courageous five month battle with brain cancer. Judy fought hard, showing her strong faith, hope and love, with unwavering positivity and grace until the very end.

Married to George Rock for 44 years, who remained compassionately and tirelessly by her side as trusted and dedicated husband and loving caregiver.

Mother to Rebecca (Thomas) Manzella, the late William J. Rock, and Dr. Simon E. Rock. Grandmother and “Blue May” to Tommy, Maria and Jack Manzella. Special companion to the late Lenny, Jr., her beloved rescue dog.

Daughter of the late William and Josephine “Joanne” Gulliver of Dolton, Illinois. Judy was the oldest of their six children: Janet (Dr. Michael) Gorski; Joanne (Ron) DeAdam; William (Mary) Gulliver; Jay (Kristy) Gulliver; and Nancy (Steve) Wuertemburg. Daughter-in-law to Martha Rock and the late George B. Rock. Sister-in-law to Pamula Rock (Tom Schott) and Sally Rock. Loving aunt to many, who cherished Aunt Judy’s smile and laughter.

Dear and devoted friend to Nancy (Donny) Rothermel, Darlene (Bruce) Kratochwell, and Vicki (Simon) Beemsterboer.

Words cannot fully or accurately describe Judy, her life or her experiences. From the stories of her days growing up in Dolton, to her time working at Standard Oil, and her trips to Western Illinois University to watch George play football, Judy always made us laugh.

After marrying George in 1976, and eventually settling down to raise their family in Tinley Park, more adventures ensued. After nearly a decade of being a renowned lunch lady at St. George School while her kids were in grade school, in the recent past Judy found her way back into the kitchen volunteering her time at the New Lenox VFW Post #9545, with her friends Nancy and Billy Koch and Shirley and Joey Pinkul.

Judy was a woman who always had a smile on her face and a story to tell. She loved her family, her countless friends and found her life’s purpose in helping and giving to others. The outpouring of love and support that she received during her illness was overwhelming and warmed her heart knowing that so many people were thinking of her and praying for her.

Our family would also like to express our thanks and gratitude to the team of wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at the University of Chicago who stood by Judy’s side during her fight.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 8404 S. Cass Avenue, Darien, Illinois.

Cremation rights have been accorded. Committal of ashes will be private at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the New Lenox VFW Post #9545.
