Background

Dr. Judith E. Loughlin, best known as “Mom or Judy,” lifelong reading teacher, trainer, coach, and consultant for literacy leadership in our nation’s schools, died suddenly, on March 9, 2021. Born in 1951, Judy began her career in public schools in 1981. By 2003, Judy earned her Doctoral degree from UMass in the area of School Psychology. Her exceptional skills lead her to an adjunct professorship at UMass and then literacy consultant roles with IDEAL Consulting, Bay State Reading Initiative (BSRI), HILL for Literacy, and the Massachusetts Department of Education. Judy trained countless district teams in both Massachusetts and Connecticut in all aspects of Literacy Leadership and was a devoted advocate for public education. She was an instant source of knowledge, comfort, and warmth to all educators and colleagues she encountered. As eloquently noted, “her life’s passion was working tirelessly for the civil right of reading for thousands of children.” “The profound impact she has had on so many students and educators will always be a part of Judy’s legacy.”

Judy had immense passion and enthusiasm for everything she did. This extended well beyond her love of literacy and learning. She shared a profound love for her husband of forty years, Bob Armstrong, and her four children. Everyone who knew Judy, knew just the importance she placed on her family. She traveled all of the coasts and enjoyed sailing oceans near and far. Judy was always in the center of adventure but maintained an unwavering acceptance and selfless generosity.

To honor Judy’s life, you are welcome to join her family, friends, and colleagues with a donation amount of your choosing, to a memorial fund that supports the professional development activities of the Massachusetts Reading Association. In particular, this memorial fund has been created to benefit next spring’s Massachusetts Reading Association Conference, occurring in April, 2022. Each donation will support conference expenses, including keynote speakers. Judy’s family, friends, and colleagues are grateful to the Massachusett Reading Association for providing this opportunity to support other teachers as they build successful communities of readers in their classrooms and schools.

Donations (checks only) should be made payable to the Massachusetts Reading Association and sent to Cindy McGurl @ 37 Preservation Lane, Holden, MA 01520 or Helen Deranian @ 31 Nikisch Avenue, Roslindale, MA 02131. Cindy and Helen will collect all donations, until October 1, and forward to Nancy Meagher, MRA Event Coordinator, MA Reading Association. All contributions, in Judy’s name, will be acknowledged, individually, by the MRA.
