Juanita's obituary
Juanita Mae West, nee Essex, peacefully passed away on June 11, 2024, in St Louis, Missouri, at the age of 94. She was born on February 9, 1930, in St Louis, Missouri, to David and Mildred Essex.
Juanita was a dedicated librarian in the St Louis public school system, serving at Gundlach Elementary School, Langston Elementary School, and Williams Middle School until her retirement in 2000. She was a proud alumna of Sumner High School (class of 1948) and Harris-Stowe College.
A long-time member of Union Memorial United Methodist Church, Juanita actively served as a member of the repast committee. She found joy in dancing, a passion she shared with her sister Jeanette in their professional dance group. In her later years, she enjoyed watching Judge Judy and keeping up with her regular hair appointments.
Juanita was a beloved member of the community, participating in the Quettes and contributing to various fundraisers and social events for over two decades. She will be deeply missed by her family, including her sons Roe (Nataki) West of Allen, TX, and Mark (Angela) West of St Louis, MO. She is survived by her grandchildren Diona West of Houston, TX, Joi (Aree) Riley, Mark II (Ashley) West, and Adriana West of St Louis, MO, as well as her great-grandchildren Ashton, Mark III, Aree II, Marlee, Kori, Kari, and Areon. Juanita was preceded in death by her parents David and Mildred Essex, husband Percy Samuel West, and her siblings Jeanette Conley and David Essex.
The funeral service will be held at Union Memorial United Methodist Church, 1141 Belt Avenue, St Louis, Missouri, Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Juanita will be laid to rest with her husband Percy, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Wade Funeral Home in St Louis, Missouri, is assisting with the arrangements. Juanita will be remembered for her kindness, dedication, and love for her family and community.
