I'm so sorry for the loss of Joylin. I pray that her boys and the family are all well. I'll always think of her and the entire Anderson family when I reminisce on my nursing school days and all the life lessons we (as her students) learned in addition to nursing. You all stuck together as a family and taught us valuable lessons that I now pass down to my nursing students. But Joy... She was unique. She was down to earth. She kept it real and knew her stuff! It's one thing to lecture, but it's another to have experience and to deliver content in a way that students understand. That is what I call a gift. And she was just that to all of her nursing students. THANK YOU Anderson family for giving me a foundation for my professional life. God bless
Strong, brilliant, confident, beautiful, that is how I remember you. Your presence as you entered the classroom was big, just like your mom and your sister. I will forever cherish what you imparted in me, because it has made me the nurse that I am today. Thank you Joy! Thanks also to the Anderson family! Happy Heavenly Birthday Joy!!!
Joylin and her incredibly supportive, engaged and proud family
I was director of the program where Joylin earned her DNP. I remember very well her hard work, her loving family and their contribution to and pride in her success.
Joylin was a bright, talented and inspiring professional. So sad she is gone.
Dear Joy! Has it really been almost 4 months? My heart still bleeds! I look so often at your pictures throughout the house. I read your journals and I miss you so very much. I can't seem to pull it together. I am so lost. How much you cared for those boys! How much you cared for Maija. How much you were willing to forgive others that wronged you! Such a blessing you were! Remembering your greatness, your love and kindness for everyone that you came in touch with gives me hope and courage. Thank you for being a wonderful daughter.

A true leader and believer by example. Dedicated wife, devoted mother, selfless friend, the epitome of a nurse and educator - beautiful and brilliant...phenomenal woman. Her friendship has been one of the greatest pleasures in my life, transcending time, distance and obstacles. May her spirit of truth, service, compassion, uncompromising faith and unparalleled support continue to be a blessing to others. Until we meet again - love you forever my JoyJoy :0) -Monica

Me and Joy meet while working at the University of Chicago Hospital over 10 years ago. She was the mother of our group that started working there together. She was always the one to make sure we kept a positive attitude and to always shoot for the stars and don’t let no one tell us we can’t accomplish anything in life. She was the inspiration to further my education. She will definitely be missed so much. She was one that always kept us laughing and getting through a night shift. Love you Joy!!!!

Ms. Joylin use to tell me to be encouraged that my troubles would not last me forever. She use to tell me to never work hard, work smart. I was crying one day because I did not get hired for a job I knew I qualified for, she said to me, put your head up! God knows whats best for you. Then, when I moved to my new position within the next 6 months she said, SEE! I will miss you Ms. JOY
It’s ok Ronald. It’s ok. Don’t cry. Everything’s going to be all right “ In her last moment of life, Joy continued to be devoted to nurturing others and emitting reassurance to all. We yearn to see you again. We will see you again in heaven. Ron-
Joylin’s smile was infectious, her sense of humor was corny but unmatched and her take charge demeanor was refreshing. I can still hear her saying, ”But Aunt Debra...” in her sarcastic, but warm southern drawl. I was ALWAYS delighted to be in Joy’s presence. My heart hurts with you. Much, much love!!
Although I am still in utter shock, I must truly say that she lived up to the meaning of her name. Joy truly brought well..."joy" into each of our lives. She is already sorely missed - Bobby Johnson
I remember Joyin well. As Director of the DNP Program at Johns Hopkins University I worked closely with Joylin throughout her program of study. Her joy and pride in her sons and family defined her as did her passion for nursing and nursing education. I remember Joyin's beautiful family all traveling to Hopkins for her final defense. I remember the warmth and pride in her accomplishments. Joylin was strong in her faith and in her life. She had a delightful spirit about her that matched the JOY in her name. Just as she lived her parents values I know her sons will become fine men. It was a pleasure to know Joylin.
Truly God left an angel here on earth when Mrs. Calhoun was gifted by God to the Anderson's, and surely he has called his angel home for a greater service in His Lord's presence. May her lagacy continue in the hearts, hope and love of her husband and son's; her legacy here on earth. May the Anderson and Calhoun families be especially blessed in the coming times through the watchful eyes of their personal guardian angel.
My beautiful, Joy - inside and out. You walked into a room with your eyes shining and a smile that lighted the world - and the whole room would light up - it was like "o.k, the party can start, Joy is here. Thank you for modeling for me what the love of Jesus looks like. You're prayer life was one of ongoing "thank you's to God - for EVERYTHING- large and small. Your constant plea to God - "keep me in Your grip, don't let me go." Your tremendous sacrifices influenced by your obedience to God's commands to love Him, love yourself, love others - for your sons, for your husband, for your parents, for your sister, for your brothers, for your family- for your nursing students! You fought for fairness for your sons on so many occasions (yet you called me the "tiger mom"). You got on that plane and flew to Baltimore on a regular basis for 5-6 years- for students who may have never had an opportunity to become a nurse had you not being willing to do so. I am so humbled by the life of love and caring that you chose to live. Remember our promise to meet, 2nd Day of Eternity, under the Tree of Life, west bank of the River, 0900, Tennessee time if Jesus has no other plans for us. Love you, mom.
A beautiful woman who taught me and guided me in teaching nursing! She had together truthness, care and intelligence in nursing, with people. She will be missed, but carried in our heart wih love and care.
Joy was my role model/mentor. I had a lot of fears as a new nurse that she helped me to conquer. For that, I will be forever grateful! Thank you to the family for sharing your jewel. I would like to remind the family, that earth has no sorry that heaven cannot heal. For she is in a better place now...a place of peace where there is no more pain, no suffering, no disappointments and complete healing!! Joy you have fought a good fight and now you’ve taken your eternal rest. I love you with all my heart!!
Ms Calhoun was my former nursing instructor. There was never a dull moment with her but I appreciated her “real ness” and motivation to push her students because many of us did not receive that at home. My deepest condolences to her kids and family. God bless you all
I met Joy over 20 years ago in Virginia Beach on our first LPN jobs together, we became friends quickly. She moved away but over the years we have had many late night phone calls and many laughs. I will always remember her laugh...I got to spend some time with her last year and I will treasure that time. We talked about cancer and how much it sucked...my dad last March and my mom in January of this year both passed from cancer and I was diagnosed as well. Joy was always positive and even with her illness was still able to console me. I will miss her and her newsletters! My condolences to the family.
A life welled lived is loving to all she knew. The memories that will be shared will provide comfort and joy to all she has touched throughout her live. My prayers are with your family.
To the entire Calhoun Family I will keep you all in prayer. I will be out of town so I will miss the service. Maybe God provide you constant uplift in the days ahead.
That was beautiful. I'm very sorry for your loss. Sorry I wont be in town during your beautiful wife services ; however my prayers will continue for you my fraternity brother and friend Kendall and your entire family.
