Grandma Joyce always stood up for those she loved. I remember one summer as a young child visiting her in Pocatello, my sister and cousins drove her crazy but she always got a kick out of our adventures. We would take her golf cart on long joy rides around the neighborhood and sometimes on the highway to get a candy bar from the gas station down the road. We played in the sand traps on the golf course, building sand castles. Mostly, we loved going to the community pool across the street. One day, Grandma took my sister and me to the pool where an older kid started teasing me for my size. He was probably around 10-12 years old, lean, tall, and pasty. He started with "Fatty fat fatso." So original. The teasing went on for a while. Finally, my sister, Dani and I went to get Grandma from her lounge chair for help. When she heard what was happening, she jumped in the pool, swam over to the kid, and dunked him right under the water. That was the moment I knew I had the coolest grandma ever. We walked out of the community center feelin' all cool and sly. I'll never forget that day.
