Joyce was educated in the D.C. Public School system. After graduating from Mary Washington High School, she went on to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN), beginning a lifetime of service to others.

Joyce began her professional career in 1968 as an LPN at Columbia Hospital for Women in NW Washington. After 27 years of dedicated service, she chose to retire in 1995. Her passion for nursing then led her to Hadley Memorial Hospital, where she served as a skilled care nurse until her second retirement in 2012.

Joyce discovered and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. As a devout follower of the evangelical Church of God in Christ she was ordained as a minister. She found her permanent church home at Mount Carmel Miracle Temple COGIC. Her steadfast loyalty to the Word  and her captivating speaking and teaching prowess led her to address many Sunday services in numerous churches across several states.

Later in life, as an ordained minister, Joyce's dedication to her religious practices and willingness to help her fellow man led her to the prestigious Howard University, where she graduated in 1997 with a degree in Nouthetic Counseling.

Eldress Brown leaves behind to cherish her memory her two children: Alicia M. Brown and William N. Brown III (Gwendolyn) and eight grandchildren: Sherice Brown-Franklin, Joyce Thomas (Adrian), David Brown, Angela Brown, Michael Brown, Cassandra Christian (Lamar), Richard Brown and William Brown IV.  She was preceded in death by her grandson Andre White. Joyce also bore witness to 13 great-grandchildren: Brandon, Jasmine, Israel, Daveon, Jada, Javonte, Richard Jr., Rashad, Kayden, Lauryn, Jamari, Aidyn, and Jaxon; as well as two great-great­ grandchildren, Prince and Josiah. 

Family was always foremost in her life; both blood and extended. Joyce's kind heart led to her being affectionately known as "Gramma" to scores of people in her neighborhoods. She leaves behind a host of additional family and friends who will always remember her as "Gramma".

She will be sorely missed.
