I remember my early years of coaching high school runners and encountering Joe.  He was so supportive and complimentary, providing me, an absolute novice, the kind of encouragement to continue this endeavor.   His support was done with a humility and serenity that I have remembered, even now almost 35 years hence.

Eddie Salazar, Livermore High School.

Among his many gifts, joe's greatest gift to all whose lives he touched was his simple, deep faith, and love for Jesus and Mother mary

I was so very sorry to hear about Coach Joe’s passing and deeply regret being unable to attend his memorial services. I have so many fond memories of him from my youth at De La Salle, running Cross Country and of course, Track & Field. He was such a positive spirit and had taught me many things that I have carried forward into my life. The concepts of never giving up, pushing oneself beyond what one believes capable, striving for excellence and selflessly working together as a team are all qualities that Coach Joe helped to foster. These qualities and many others, have been paramount to successes in my life. He truly cared about his student/athletes and treated each one as though they were the most important on the team. Everyone he coached was made to feel important, regardless of ability. I can still hear him calling out our individual names while running alongside of us during training sessions. “Come on Chris, pick up those feet, get those knees up.” I feel so fortunate to have known Coach Joe and blessed to have been able to spend some one-on-one time with him while traveling for Invitational races like the Sunkist or Bruce Jenner Classic and of course the State meets. For over forty years, we communicated only occasionally through an email and once or twice over the phone. Upon reading this beautiful obituary, I find that I was only familiar with a very small portion of Coach Joe’s life. He was an even more remarkable man than what I knew of him. The pic I included is from the last time I saw Coach Joe in person at the DLS Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 2012. I offer my sincere condolences to Theresa and all of Joe’s family. He continues to live on, in all of our lives and will always be remembered as a positive light.  Rest in peace Coach Joe!
Joe and I had a special bond with the horses. I remember a few times driving out to Golden Gate on my prep period at DLS  to wager on some horses for the both of us. I loved Joe's accent and his sense of hunor. He taught my wife Aggie at Saint Isodore's and is still  the only person who called her by her real first name -Catherine.  What a great coach and mentor. You will be missed Joe

Our late brother Garth’s widow, Gail shared a story about Joe which I will share here.

When Joe went shopping with Garth and Gail in the grocery store in California, Gail said to Joe”oh dear I made a list for shopping and I left it at home” Joe promptly turned to other shoppers and said has anyone got a shopping list for my sister-in-law because she has left hers at home” that was typical our brother Joe and his good sense of humour. Bless him, I had a good laugh as others in the store did!

So sorry to hear of Uncle Joe's passing.

I have the fondest and funniest memories of our time in California in 1982 for 18 months.

Joe became a father figure and made time for myself and Matt my brother ( Joe's nephews) to drive us around, take us for walks and hikes and camping ( together with Damian Stocking too!).

Joe was inspirational and key to helping us though what was a difficult time as a teenager with his positive attitude- his love for sports and most importantly his love for a laugh!

Most road trips involved a stop off at some horse racing track , or at the minimum, somewhere to put a bet on his meticulously calculated chosen horse! which invariably most of the time lagged behind in the race!

Joe was always generous and kind , and a great uncle to us and role model.

I remember being so happy for him when he met Theresa. When they first met - I just knew he had found the person he would spend the rest of his life with- he was so happy.

I will miss him and always have some amazing memories to treasure.

Rest in peace Uncle Joe X

I am sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was very kind to me when my father passed away. He was kind enough to be a pall bearer at his funeral.  Rest in Peace, Joe.
So fond of Joe and Theresa as they distributed Communion to my Mom at the Vineyard Health Care Center, and visited with us numerous times.  Also, aways updating me on our mutual friend, Marilyn, when she relocated to Southern California. Miss their wonderful smiles.  God Bless them both and keep them in His Loving arms.
