Marty's obituary

Joseph Martin (Marty) O’Neill (80) of Punta Gorda Florida passed away peacefully on February 3rd, 2023. Marty was born to Norma Anne (Cerruti) and Joseph Ambrose O’Neill in Camp Oglethorpe, GA on November 24th, 1942. He married his friend and love of his life, Mary Anne (Tontz) O’Neill in 1964 and was devoted to her every day for almost 60 years.

Marty graduated from Saint Matthews School in 1956, from Loyola High School Blakefield in 1960, and from Loyola College in 1964. After graduating from Loyola College, Marty enlisted in the US Army and served his country for 2 years at Fort Meade, MD in the intelligence branch achieving the rank of Captain. After his release from active duty he served as a captain in the army reserves for 4 years. Marty was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing and teaching those skills to his family and friends. He participated in marksmanship competitions and won several metals.

After leaving the service he began a long career in sales moving from Xerox to real estate and eventually becoming a real estate broker and starting his own real estate development company O’Neill and Co. He always loved the land and eventually moved the family to the country to live on a farm. Together with his wife they learned farming and taught their family the value of hard work and honesty.

Marty amassed an impressive collection of taxidermy traveling across the United States. He also spent a lot of time teaching family and friend to hunt and fish and his ability to find and bring home fish and game astounded his family and friend and made for many great family meals. After putting his kids thru catholic grade school, catholic high school, and college, he and Mary Anne retired and moved to Florida. Marty enjoyed spending time with those he loved and taking trips. Equally enjoyable, he loved teaching and advising his children and grandchildren and helping to guide them through life.

He is survived by his wife (Mary Anne) and five children, Laurie Bienert (Klaus), Michael O’Neill (Suzanne), Scott O’Neill, Patrick O’Neill, and Tim O’Neill and fourteen grandchildren who loved him for his wisdom and support. Marty taught us all the value and importance of creating loving relationships by being there for friends, family and all the people he loved. We will all miss him dearly.

Those who knew Marty know he hated being the center of attention and would rather give than receive and per his wishes there will be no public funeral services. In lieu of funeral services, and to honor Marty please make a donation in his name to the American Cancer Society.
